I put a Fender Vintage '62 pickup in it (the Fender pickup is a bit smaller than the metric Korean pickup, but the gap isn't significant) 250K pots to replace the 500K pots and a 0.022 Cap.
Great tone! Quite an improvement.

I might have went with a 0.05 cap but a 0.022 will work. I have used that value and the 0.018 for treble bleeds in a P/J Vol/Blend/Tone Bill Lawrence WILDE P/J configuration.

Glad it came out well. The late 50's through 62 Fender P-Bass pickups are the most recorded pickups of all time!

I've got the Seymour Duncan Basslines SPB-3 Quater Pound pup on a P Bass. I don't know if that would work for you or not. I like the sound it puts out.

Are we trading this one in too?

You can be pretty sure Rotosounds were the strings, his amps were Hiwatt.

John didn't use anything entirely, you'll be able to find lists and lists of stage and recording equipment he used. There are a few items that he always used as a base to his sound, a Palmer Tube Emulator and Tech 21 Bassdriver which is the RBI rackmount. Geddy Lee uses these too. While he constantly searched for the "perfect" sound, I really wonder if he was ever completely satisfied. He was always changing, genius does that I guess. Anyone reading this, let me know if he was ever quoted as saying he found it.

To answer your question, at Leeds he used Frankenstein, a refinished slab bass with stock pickup, he always felt they was unique and had more character and power.

For future reference, Whotabs is a good place to find info, as well as many other places on the web.

One word of warning, the deeper you go into The Ox, the more inadequete you'll feel. Don't stop, work harder.

I have to go to the Honda dealer tomorrow, no little shop does the timing belt here for the 100k - they used a special tool to hold the cams while taking the belt off  So it will be timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, and radiator flush...Darn Honda v6's :x :x

[quote="fjbass"]Been there with Honda. I had a 1977 Civic. That was when you only saw one on the road every two or three days.[/quote

Too funny, my mom and dad had this '77 4dr hatch back in the early 80's. The four of us, mom, dad, me and my sister, went on a road trip with 3 of my uncles. 10 hr trip, 7 of us, granted I was only 9, my sister 6 and my one uncle 5 yo, but the other 2 uncles were 16 and 13...and my sister sat on mom's lap...LOL! No seatbealt either...This was in Indonesia btw.

a few months back I saw a refurbished '78 yellow Civic CVCC for sale - $10g...CA car...yeah for that kind of money you better be a Honda or just a car collector. It's cool, but nothing I'd go crazy about. I'd buy another used Accord V6, pref an '05 coupe with 6 spd manual - or a 6 spd TSX. Maybe even some old Mustang GT, cuz that's practical for Wisconsin....

He used lots of different amps. I've dug into this more. When touring North America in their early days the band had an endorsement deal with Thomas Organ Co to use VOX amps and Entwhistle played a couple of Superbeatles then. Then later the band got a SUNN endorsement deal for North American gigs. Turns out they abandoned their Sunn gear at Canadian customs as they couldn't or wouldn't pay a $20,000 bond on it.
(Remind me to never play Canada.)

In Europe he used various Marshall amps, then went to Sound City amps, then went to Hiwatt in early 1970. He also took Hiwatt badges and put them on his Sound City gear which looked a lot like Hiwatt gear in the first place so it is hard to tell the difference. One head I saw clearly had Sound City stenciled on the faceplate but he had put a Hiwatt badge on it. Later he put WHO badges on his cabs and heads.

From what I've been able to gather his setup by the time the LEEDS show happened was three heads and at least four cabs minimum. One head would have bass wide open with treble full OFF, the other head was set with treble wide open and bass full OFF. These were mainly 60 watt Sound City and 100 watt Hiwatt heads. He customarily used two heads at a time with the third head being a backup (usually the Sound City) and only used the backup if one of the others developed a problem.

Anyway I have also found precious few photos of the LIVE AT LEEDS stage and the Hiwatt badged cabs are there, I see two of them side by side with the heads stacked up on the left but you can't make out much about the heads or see if there were more cabs to the left of the heads. Very fuzzy photos by and large.

So I stand corrected. It was not Marshall, but was probably a mix of Sound City and Hiwatt gear or all Hiwatt.

I once spent some time with Tim Gorman, who played keys for The Who. Gorman is the guy you hear on 'Eminence Front'. He said John played really, really loud onstage. I think getting those power amps and speakers wide open and moving a lot of air was a big part of his sound, no matter what gear he was using, along with his unique technique.

He also said he was quite the joker off-stage :)

Brother Dave - what's the difference in sound between the 0.05 and the 0.022?

Not trying to horn in on Bro Dave but a simple answer is that a 5 is more treble and a 22 is less treble. That's the Caveman definition.

I'm a bass player even though I don't play one on TV.
