Hello e'rybody. A stupid question for you.
Does anyone know what year tortoise guards were introduced on American Standard Serie P Bass? I tought all the first Am St P basses were equipped only with white guards.

Cheerz!

And what are the difference between American Series and American Standard? I read on the Black&Molinaro book that Am St. Series was introduced in 1986, but I don't remember any P bass with tort guard from that era..

To be honest I don't knowthe exact year but I suspect that you are right that tort guards were not used in the 80's on Am. standard basses.

Tortoise shell plastic was not used on anything but the vintage reissue basses back in the day. You could buy one and put it on your bass, but It didn't come that way.

Fender stopped using tortoise shell plastic guards in 1973 due to OSHA regs. that the plastic used in those guards was toxic to work with.

It took awhile to formulate a new tortoise shell looking plastic for the vintage series

I think a variety of models besides the vintage series started using tortoise shell plastic guards after 2000.

I also think that the redesign of the basses in 2008 coincided with Fender using tortoise shell plastic on the 2008 model bass. I don't know if the S-1 equiped P bass came with a tortoise shell guard. It may have.

Thanx for the answers mates.
Why Fender doesn’t have in catalogue the 4-Ply Brown Shell Pickguard as direct replacement for Standard and American Standard Series Precision Bass?
Despite Fender offers Standard and American Standard P basses with this feature, currently is only available the Reissue 62 Precision tortoise pickguard, but it’s slightly different from a Standard one as the reissue one has 4 more holes for thumbrest and pup cover.

Anyway, I've just tried to contact the consumer relations at Fender about this question. Hope they can say more.
Thanx everybody and don't stop posting if you have something more to say.
Cheerz!

Brownshell pickguards are not a stock item for Fender AFAIK.

All of their tortoise shell pickguards are the red variety.

A number of aftermarket companies make the brown shell guards.

Mr Treat from Fender Consumer Relations wrote back me.

"The part # for the replacement pickguard (the exact same one) is # 005-6018-000, and you can order it from Music Parts Guru 630-521-9170."

Thanx again Mr. Treat!

Try Warmoth. I bought a brown tortoise shell version for my new Highway 1 Black Nitro-Cell finish. It looks great IMHO. By the way, watch out for rubber products in contact with the new Nitro finishes, such as stands. Some manufacturers say don't use their stands with nitro finishes, as does Fender.
