Look for the Standard P-bass, not American Standard P-bass

Mexican Made Basses, there's the standard, the Classic Series and the Road Worn i think are also from Mexico...
in 2009 the standard series changed the logo to black, same with the 70's, and giving the neck a vintage tint... back in 2008 the logo is somewhat graying and the neck is lighter in color...

Play several amps and pick the one you like best that is in your price range. If you are just starting out you can get by on a 15 watts, but 30 is better. Also try to get one with a 10 inch speaker, auxiliary input which you can use for IPOD, MP3 or CD plus a jack for headphones is real good feature.

When testing them use the same bass you are going to play through it. Stick to the major brands. Also there is nothing wrong with used bass amps as you can often get a better amp for the money.

When testing them be aware that whit the volume set at half volume they usually don't have that much left to give that sounds clean.

My daughter loves her Line 6 bass amp, sounds great through the headphones (Dad appreciates this ;) ), and Fender has similar amps.

I actually use a Line 6 Studio 110 for rehearsals. For the old school stuff I play it is fine for a rehearsal. One caveat about the Line 6 is that it uses digital amp emulation. This makes every bass I have all sound very similar and you lose some of the individuality of each instrument. For the size, weight and price it is a good practice or rehearsal amp or you could gig with it in a very small club.

Fender's new Rumble designs are worth a look too. I'm all for small, light and versatile.

For home practice I now favor playing from a Sans Amp direct to a mixer which feeds the auxiliary input of my computer audio card. I can practice, play along to recorded tracks or record my own bass demos using any recording software like the free but totally great Audacity. I mostly use headphones for home practice except when everyone is gone. I usually play the same thing over and over many times trying to get it right. In college in 1972 when the guy in the next dorm room put on "WHIPPING POST" by the Allman Brothers on his record changer, cranked it up, set it to play repeatedly until he returned and then went home for the weekend I learned that hearing the same thing over and over can be really annoying. To this day I can not stand to hear "Whipping Post." LOL

I have one of the Line 6 X3 Live units and love it. The models in the X3 are incredible, and I think the bass models are under appreciated. I use it live through a tube power amp for guitar, but at home I use the bass models also.

Some, like the B15 and SVT, are uncanny in the way they respond and feel. The models in my daughter's amp (I think it's the 8" model) are OK, the X3's are much more lifelike. I don't hear the digital sameness you are describing. Worth a try if you ever see an X3 for cheap.

There's a demo here: http://line6.com/podx3/bass.html

Sure wish they had this stuff when I was growing up!

I see Fender just released a bunch of new stuff, including Rumble amps, at NAMM, so we'll see what's new here soon.
