Just wondering how many of us sand the back of our bass guitars. I read that Geddy Lee sanded his J-Bass.

Ive been tempted to do this after playing my friend's bass which has a sanded neck. It's very fast and nice to play but when I go back to mine I've never really felt impeded by it, and in time the finish will wear off anyway. It's started to already! :)

I've done it to one bass, the neck didn't have a great finish on it and when i took out the frets i needed to sand it anyways, now its fast and smooth. My Fender i want to wear down naturally. it's my main bass and i want it to become an old friend that wears over time, not something that i age artificially.

On a modern neck, it's slick enough for me with the satin finish. However, I also run a '51 RI with a laquered neck, and feel that's just fine too! And yes, don't relic them, gig the finish off! Carefully!

Thanks for the responses, I think I'm going to leave it, I polish it with Martin Guitar polish so it's pretty fast anyway. My lead guitar playing son says he sands the neck on all of his guitars, but then again, he has not been known for his super intelligence.

Not to mention it could void the warranty if it is a new model.

My son is a lead guitarist who has never touched a bass in his life. Every time I talk to him he picks at me about playing a "4 string guitar." Anybody know any good comebacks?

Tell you don't play a guitar with 4 strings. You play a bass. It's not a guitar. Now, a Fender VI, that's a guitar, a BASS guitar. You play an elecgtric bass, period. Then get him to try a fretless or an upright...
:D :D

for the finish on the neck, it's there for a reason and that's to protect the wood. 99.99% of fender necks are maple and maple requires a sealed finish to protect against warping and expansion/contraction. An unfinished neck is prone to swelling and or shrinkage that can result in frets sticking out at the edges and even coming unseated altogether. I have taken a light steel wool to one neck just to reduce the amount of finish and basically ended up with a near satin finish, which is just right for my taste. If you absolutely cannot stand finish then look into a replacement neck made from a stable wood like bubinga, wenge or rosewood (available from that company in washington state) Hope this helps
