Hi, I recently purchased a 1979 Cream Fretless Rosewood Precison Bass. It has the two Precision pickups that a P Bass usually has but it also has a Jazz pickup in the rear. 3 knobs...the Pickups are EMG and look old and orginal. I'm a Guitar player so not Familiar with all the Basses Fender put out.

My question: did Fender put out a model like this? Also, did Fender uses EMG's on some basses...my thought is that either Fender used EMG'son this bass or the originals were swapped...they do look old.

Serial number S917233

Any info is greatly appreciated.

I guess its a Precision bass special - these have the P/J combination. I think, but cant be sure, that they had J bass necks too. I could be wrong on that though.

I'm pretty sure the EMGs will be replacements, fender almost always use their own PUs from what I've seen.

Emgs are very nice after market replacements though. Sounds like you have a great bass there! :)

I would think that's a modded bass. No Specials as early as that. And Fender never used EMGs back then, or since, so far as I'm aware. It's simply a hot-rodded fretless P, and none the worse for that. Although I'd personally put stock Fender pickups in it if it were mine. And I wish it was!

Hi, thanks for your help. I think I know what I have...it's a 1997 Cream(Olympic White) California P Bass Special Body(USA) with the EMG's and the '79 Fretless Rosewood neck with the '79 Neck plate on it. Apparently the former owner had the the '97 and the '79 and made a custom bass. Looks and sounds awesome. :o)

As mentioned earlier, Fender did not, and still does use EMG's in there basses.

Sounds like a wonderful sounding bass. :D
