Just ordered the 51 p bass reissue from my local store for a great price. I got a fairly decent discount :)
ordered the 2 color sunburst and might even get some d'dario chrome thrown in for a special price. We ordered today an I'll get the call for if there in stock on Monday. Then it's the waiting game... I'm real exicited!

So how do I post pics of it for when it comes? Photobucket or something?

Will p

Good for you, sounds like a great deal. Go to Brother Dave's site, he has instructions for posting.

Here's a little question... Say after a while I play the bass and I don't put my thumb on the pickup like brotherdave once said and I don't add the pickup covers. Could I add a thumbrest above the E string? Is there a good spot to place one and is it hard or ebb possible to install one? Just wondering incase i have trouble playin on the E string.

You know, I bought one of the Fender 50's Style (I think she's called) P Basses where it has the holes drilled through the pickguard, but no thumbrest.

I ended up buying a genuine Fender thumbrest from Ebay or somewhere and it came with a folded up mounting template to help you attach it in the event you didn't have pre-existing holes drilled in already.

how about the thumb rest above the E string thought? I believe you would be more likely to find this sort of thing on a 70's p bass or jazz bass. i've never seen one on a 50's style but i'd like to if any one had a picture.

I just checked the template that came with my thumb rest. For some reason or another, I kept it.

It shows exactly how to mount the thumb rest above the E string for P & J style basses. It's part number 0992036000

Congrats Will!

As OXFAN said I have photo instructions posted at the website in my forum signature below. Click that link then click the RED link for ONLINE BASS COMMUNITIES. The Fender Forum photo instructions are there.

On real '51's the finger rest was for fingers because I think Leo Fender believed we would all play thumb style. You can put a thumb rest on them.

The original finger rests were wooden with one center screw hole instead of two. Some people sell reproductions of these or you can make one yourself. They were painted black. I see them on eBay sometimes.

I just use the E-String as a thumb rest except when actually plucking it. But if you want to drill holes. Read the thread titled "PICKUP COVERS" in the JAZZ Bass forum. Same things hold true. Use masking tape to mark on and drill. Have some way to make sure you can not possibly drill all the way through the body. Remove masking tape promptly.

There are several sources selling Fender RI pickup and bridge covers. Including Angela Instruments.

The sales men at the store called fender an the bass is in stock! I'm guessing that will be the difference of recieving it in 2 weeks instead of 4!

Haha, funny... The sales men whom I an friends with on facebook gave me the message via writing on my "wall" instead of calling me. Guess that's just how the world works now!

Bout that new bass..... IT'S HERE!!!!
I'm now an official fender and precision bass owner!

I love the bass so much! The little problems I thought I'd run into did not dare show up. The store set it up for me and it plays like a dream!

The one down point.... I am curently not a flatwound guy :(
but the d'dario chrome will be in soon (along with some pics) and I'll be all good! :) :)

will P

I think once you get the flats on it and get used to them that you'll love them. Have my 51 out now. It was just like yours before my little personal tweaks. Enjoy!

If you are not happy with the strings, try the GHS 3050 REGULAR set net. Juststrings.Com carries them. THUMP ON!
