I'm in the market for my first "real" bass. I'm primarily a guitar player but I've been playing bass for about 5 years now. I am looking to get either an American Standard P Bass w/ a maple fretboard or an American Vintage 57 P Bass to use primarily for recording. I play rock that is influenced mostly by classic rock and some 90s stuff.

So...which one should I buy? What are the pros and cons of each?

Thanks!

All I can tell you is the standard reply, try 'em both and see which one suits you best. They're both good.
I realize that maybe not much help, but it's really the best way, I didn't have that luxury myself, I had to buy my Jazz online, basically it was a gamble, but I got lucky. If you are able try them out.

Interesting as I really like both and was considering selling my Am St to get a 57. Check out the specs, there are alot of nice modern improvements on the new AM ST though. Truss rod notch is at the head stock too as 50's basses until the 62. (hopefully brother Dave can give some insights to these differences) I really like the idea of graphite reinformed neck on the Am ST (hopefully this keeps the neck more stable )I've played both, but also really like 50's road worn P bass. It feels great with really nice playability, and a broken in feel, nice tone too.

its either you would go for a slimmer neck profile on a 57 P or a thicker 9.5 with a posiflex.. the choice is yours either way you cant go wrong with those two...

I played a G&L with a 12" radius fingerboard for a while, and loved the feel of it. But once I got a real P, with the real P sound, I traded it off. As it happens, I have three reissues: a '51 (chunky neck, no contours), a Classic '50s (slightly less chunky neck) and an A V '57 (prefect neck) and all have the 7-1/4" radius fingerboard (and reverse tuners). It took awhile to get used to the higher crown, especially with some of the Santana material we were doing, but now I'm used to it, and it feels comfortable.

That's about it: if you like a flatter fingerboard, and can't get used to turning the keys the "wrong" way [it does make things interesting when somebody picks up your bass and starts cranking the tuners, like some nitwits do], get the AS. Personally, I love my 57 and don't expect to ever replace it -- although, after watching Standing in the Shadows of Motown I may find a place in my rack for a '62 tri-burst P....
