Hello,

Were there any bass pedals available in the 60's? Or were bassists forced to just use what was out for guitars? Please let me know.

I love the 60's rock sound and would love to use the same pedals with my bass.

There were none, per se. Some used fuzz boxes once in a while for solos (such as they were) but that's about it.

Nope, what few guitar effects there were in the 60s sounded awful on bass, sucked all the low-end out.
Are there bass tones on specific tunes you're looking to recreate?

No bass effects pedals in the 60's that I remember. There were some guitar effects pedals that I used in 1970 through 72 on bass.

First, I tried the Fender FUZZ WAH which was a combo Fuzz and Wah-Wah pedal. The fuzz was uncontrollable other than turning the volume on the instrument down would make it cleaner. The Wah function was a string drive arrangement that would tear up in no time flat. It also had a built in volume control which was neat but the string drive wah was the weak link there.

Second, the Fender Blender. It was a totally adjustable distortion device. I liked it much better. It did trash some of the low end but could be used for some pretty good sounds. Using a Jazz I could get a good Jack Bruce type sound out of it into an Ampeg SVT if I pushed the ULTRA LOW switch on the Ampeg.

I don't use any pedals at gigs now except a compressor pedal and an A/B/Y footswitch at gigs.

I am trying for two sounds. Both are slightly overdriven, one overdriven with a wah ( geezer Butler bass solo before N.I.B. On Black Sabbaths first album. I don't like Sabbath, but love Geezers Bass playing. Starts at 3:38 through 4:30 up until Ozzy says " oh yea!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uswtl8hU ... tube_gdata

But I love his tone through all these songs if someone could tell me how to get it. As far as I know he played a pbass.

The other slightly overdriven sound is Jack Casady on Wont you try/Saturday Afternoon from their Woodstock performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_ibg41k ... tube_gdata

For that specific Geezer tone I'd get an Envelope Filter and an Overdrive.
Can't hear the Airplane very well on my cheezy speakers, sorry. But, JC is/was a fan of Overdrive too.

I know this is a dumb questions, but, you say "Overdrive". Is that a specific one from back in the 60's, or just any Overdrive pedal.

Also, which envelope filter, or will any suffice?

Sorry for the dumb questions.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

By Overdrive I mean, to recreate today what was originally done with massively loud overdriven amps(not effects) back then, you'd need an (Bass)Overdrive pedal.

There are several Envelope Followers around, I'd suggest going to Guitar Center and trying them (and Bass Overdrives) out to find something you like. Also check Harmony Central for effects reviews.

I'm not sure. I did have a late 60's Yamaha Amp that had a Built In Distortion Knob that I thought was cool.
