Some form of the Precision or Jazz by Fender or Squier would be a good starter.

If you are sure you are going to be playing bass for a long time it would be wise to start out with a Fender Standard. If you aren't sure you'll stick with it then one of the Squier basses might be wiser.

The Precision is more basic with 1 volume and 1 tone control. The Jazz adds another pickup and an additional volume control. The Jazz neck is narrower which suits some people better, or not as well as the slightly wider Precision neck.

If you go the Squier route I'd bypass the basic Affinity Series Squiers for the slightly more expensive Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified series because they are worth the extra money.

There are dozens of companies making knockoffs that look like a Precision or Jazz and some of them are pretty good. Also there are some pretty good original design starter instruments made by other major companies with lots of experience making guitars. The main thing is to get one you think you could be happy with for a while but keep it simple.

The first home practice amp is also important and it should have at least a ten-inch speaker. You are better off buying the instrument and amp separately. Most of the amps that come in the "Starter Kit" type packages with instrument, amp and all the accessories are usually not very good ones. Better than no amp though.

depends on a few things. i got my first p-bass when i was 13, my hannds obviously weren't fully grown and i found it really tricky to play. once i hit about 16 i started to find it a lot easier. the best advice i could give would be go to your local suplier and try them out. see what feels best for you. take it easy.

Go back to all the previous posts and take the excellent advice given.

All I'll add is, go play a bunch of them before you buy, there will be one that "fits" just right.

I have a P Bass, American, and I have a Re-issue 75 Jazz, just beautiful, but I have to say, I reach for the P every time.
