Are the individual pichup magnet poles height-adjustable, independent of raising and lowering the plastic pickup body as a whole? If so, how are they adjusted and is it something a non-professional setup person should try?

If you are asking this question with your 62 RI in mind, the answer is, no.

When adjusting the pick-up height on my '62 Vintage Precision reissue, where is the measurement of the pick-up height taken at... the pick-up cover, or the pole pieces?

The cover. You are much better off using your ear though.

One guy told me he removes his pickups, adjusts the pole pieces by finger pressure and re-installs them.

Certain Fender pickups you can but not with the 57/62s. Those polepieces are permanently set in the coil windings. To attempt to move them would destroy the coil.

I've heard of people claiming they moved the pole pieces with no problem. One guy wrote on the Talk Bass Forum a few years back that he gave the raised A-Pole a little tap with a hammer. BUT THAT IS NUTS! I would NOT do that!

As far as balancing the split coils and getting good string to string balance, instead of moving the poles, plug the guitar directly into a mixer with a VU meter or a computer with recording software. All compression should be OFF. Adjust pickup height using the screws to get a good balance. It isn't hard if you have a meter.

My recording software has a far more sensitive VU meter than the LED's on the mixer. Often mixers just have 5 or 6 leds. I've also used my compressor pedal which has an LED INPUT LEVEL VU array on it to make field tweaks. Adjusting the pickup height adjustment screws should be all the adjusting you have to do.

On my previous P-bass (a '78) the previous owner had the pup flat to the pickguard. I readjusted them according to the directions on the Fender website, and Dan Erlewine's Guitar Repair book (to the top of the poles IIRC), using their measurements, and it was a vast improvement. No real need to get fancy, just folow Fender's instructions, and you should be fine.
