the diagram that came with my quarter ponders does not work. i am looking for a diagram that will work. And what about the brass plate underneath the original pickups that had wires soldered to it? Do I need to reattach them?

This diagram works:

The grounding plate under the pickup should be wired to the tone circuit ground on the back of the volume pot. I'd just remove it and copper line the entire cavity though, but that is just me.

Brotherdave- by removing the plate just wire up everything according to diagram you posted?

I would leave the pickup shielding base plate in and ground it.

Just solder one end of a length of wire to the base plate and the other end to the back of the volume pot. This provides some shielding and noise reduction.

On a Precision bass due to the inherent humbucking properties of the pickup design grounding the pickup base plate often is adequate shielding for most applications. It makes a tiny difference.

You just have to add one wire with two solder connections, the extra ground wire is soldered to the pickup grounding base plate and the other end is soldered to ground on the back of the volume pot. The diagram I suggested you try doesn't show this extra ground wire from the base plate because not all Fender basses came with baseplates since they were discontinued, but if you have one then I'd ground it. It will work either way but the bass will have slightly better RFI and hum rejection if you ground the baseplate. It will only take a minute or two extra and less than a foot of wire. The gauge of the wire isn't really that critical.

The diagram I suggested you use doesn't show that extra ground wire from the base plate, but I'd do it. It will work either way but the bass will have slightly better RFI and hum rejection if you ground the base plate in the pickup cavity. Would only take a minute extra to run that wire.
==========

Once you get your bass working, if you are still hearing hum, RFI, etc when cranking the tone knob wide open then you could opt to do a full copper shielding/star grounding job to further increase noise reduction.
To see how to do that go to the site page in the link in my forum signature below, then click on the red link for DO-IT-YOURSELF SETUP & MAINTENANCE and scroll down the page to "SHIELD YOUR BASS."
