This may be a stupid question, but can you put the 8250s on an MIM? The reason I'm asking is they come standard on the USA standards and they are string through. I was thinking they might me longer strings for some reason.

I like D'Addario EXL 160's. They've got a great piano-ish sound to them. I've tried D'Addario's ProSteel EPS 160's. They're really bright and quite durable. But, they may have gouged my frets a little bit. I set my bridge low, play with my fingers, and get amazing action off of my frets. I get flat spots on my strings, corresponding with where my strings hit my frets. Nickel is a softer metal, so it happens.

I'm surprised, with all the responses, that no one mentioned Rotosounds? I used the Swing Bass sets for years on my old P Basses...they sounded great, although they did take their toll on the frets over the years (you could actually see the inpression of the string winds in some of the most used frets).
I am very pleased with the "voice" of the 8250's that came standard on my '08 American Standard...they sound good, and record very well, and have a nice range. These weren't available back in the good old Rotosound days...I'm going to stay with the Fenders, at least for the time being.

Fret wear is an undesirable side effect with any stainless round, not just the Rotosound rounds.

I have switched to Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats for all my Precisions (LaBella nylon tape wound on my Martin B-1). Best sounding, easy on the fingers and frets, and they last forever.

There is a legion of Thomastik JF344 fans. I do use them on ONE bass. They do last a VERY long time. Seriously, they last YEARS. Their longevity does offset the freaky high cost.

HOWEVER, they are NOT my favorite string. The JazzFlats set has ultra low tension. Actually they are probably the lowest tension string on the planet which runs counter to most flat sets which usually have higher tension than their roundwound counterparts from the same maker. I mean the JazzFlats tension is SO LOW that when switching instruments between one with JazzFlats and one with anything else I tend to OVERPLAY the JazzFlats big time or worse, underplay the other one. JazzFlats need a light touch when finger played. They also sound good with a thick fat pick. They also are not true ribbon wrapped flats like the Labella 760M or the GHS 3050 Regulars, but are in fact GROUND-WOUNDS. Their tone is way above average for a string called a "flat" but not the very best string tone I've ever found for me and my style or my needs. Yet sometimes they are JUST RIGHT. Mostly for me their "JUST RIGHT" times are on an active bass.

My favorite all-around string for feel, tension, all around tone and longevity on a passive bass is the roundwound Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass which has a way more aggressive tone and a super high output that blows the Jazz Flats completely away in versatility. They actually sound better on my passive P-Basses than the Jazz Flats do on an active bass...and guess what? They last just as long! Guess what else? I can also get a Jamerson/Dunn tone from them on a passive bass. Yay!

I find it VERY hard, if not actually downright impossible, to get a Jamerson/Dunn thump with T.I. JazzFlats on a passive bass. The tones I get from the JazzFlats often get lost in the mix. They are a great recording string though, especially when played with a pick and ran through a compressor. However I find they lack EXCITEMENT in my SOUL and they bring very little ENERGY to me when playing live. I know there are lots of people that think JazzFlats are the ONLY string to play, but I'm actually NOT one of them. They have their place. That place is live Jazz BeBop or studio Pop with a pick. For finger style playing at a gig l have never found, nor am I likely to find, a better string all around for me than the Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass. Awesome...totally awesome. And WORTH every penny, peso, pence, Euro, or whatever currency you use. A set of TI EB344 PowerBass strings that are two years old is PERFECT for gig use and I'd trade my hag for ONE set of them. She's all yours.

My FAVORITE flat is NOT the Labella 760M either. After playing the fat Labellas for 15 years I find that the recently discovered GHS 3050 PRECISION REGULAR is my favorite flat set on a PASSIVE first generation P-bass. I also LOVE the GHS3025 PRECISION LIGHT set on my passive P/J with the Bill Lawrence "WILDE" P/J set and Vitamin-Q caps. When I want something that plays EASY and smooth I reach for the old bass Cort plant in Korea made Ibanez TRB-70 that is set up with the little GHS flats. It is like fingering your prom date in the limo on the way home.

If you ask TWENTY bassists about strings....you'll probably get TWENTY different recommendations. The marriage of INSTRUMENT, STRING SET and STYLE is MAGIC when it is right, and PURE HELL when wrong.

Someone brought up the DEAN MARKLEY BLUE STEEL set. I'd like to know exactly WHICH SET. I tried a set of the BLUE STEELS once. Could not get a vintage tone or a decent THUMP. If I wanted to play piano, I would have bought a piano.

LIKE I SAID. String selection is very subjective. I have mine. You'll have yours. Newbies have to find their own way.

AND for a NYLON WRAPPED STRING. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like the Fender 9120M best, especially on a Fretless. If you put NYLONS on a fretted bass you can get a very interesting tone but eventually, the nylon breaks down at the frets. There is not a better ballad sound than NYLONS and the latest Fender nylons of the recent 3 or 4 years are cool. Just don't expect them to last more than a gig or two on a fretted bass. YET it is a VERY cool sound! I'd like to put them on my '68 Telecaster Bass. Unfortunately I traded it off forty years ago.

Rotosound! Hell on the fingers & I like them old with a bit a flesh in them. Do a search & see who else uses them. They will have a real ping to them in the beginning & need a good streching, but get a real good classic, southern, & blues sound after a lot of playing. Ofcourse you could buy flat rounds & try to bypass the playing with the active circut, but they will never sound as good. My personal taste though. Trial & error brother, trial & error.,,,,,,Listen to the practice / jam / gig / studio tapes. Trial & error! But ain't that the fun part though?

If you like Coated strings then try a set of "Ernie ball Coated" (gage of your choice).
I was never a fan of coated string till i tried these, all the other coated string that i had used i found that to start with it made the whole bass feel sticky (grease gets all over the neck off your fingers etc yuk!) then gets to greasy an slippery after a while but tried a set of these just for the sake of trying a set an wont use anything else now, there great ! nice to the touch with a warmer punchy tone to them an do last a bit longer, they are more expensive but defiantly worth checking out a set if you have not yet tried them.

But saying that your choice of string, gage is a personal thing so the only real way you are going to find out what you like an what you don't like is to just keep trying different brands an gages till you find something you like.
Good luck !
