I've got a black p bass plus with a white pickguard. I think it's an '89. I've had it 10 or 11 years, and it's in OK shape. I want to change it up a little bit, and I want to see if anyone's got any advice. First of all, where can I get a pickguard for it? I see pickguards for the p bass deluxe, but of course I need the hole for the push button. So, I either need to know where to get a pickguard specifically for the p.b. plus, or I need to know what I could use to punch a hole in one for the p bass deluxe. My second question is - does anyone know if there's such a thing as a white jazz Lace Sensor pickup (or other colors besides black)? I like the pickups, but I don't like the black jazz pickup on the black body. I want it to visually pop more. Or does anyone know of any topper or bobbin cover I could use or where to find one? I was also considering using a piece of adhesive vinyl to stick on the pickup, and I wonder if that would interfere with the electronics. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Hello!

From my understanding you're looking for a replacement pickguard for your Boner P-Bass and a Lace Sensor Jazz Bass pickup with white covers.

1. There are many pickguard makers such as Warmoth, WD, Pickguardian and Jeannie who sell a variety of pickguards in different shapes and custom colours. Both WD and Pickguardian offer replacement pickguards for the Boner American Standard Jazz Bass. Note: You must send an e-mail with an attached image from the original P-Bass Plus pickguard as a template.

2. Unfortunately Lace Sensor bass pickups are available only with black covers. It's advisable to contact the Lace Custom Shop in order to obtain the white pickup covers; their prices are a bit higher.

I own this US made P-Bass Plus and I really love it.

I'm currently playing in a swing band (gigging twice a week at retirement centers). I had it re-strung with flat wound strings to get the older sound.

For the "deep thumping" upright sound I like to dampen the strings with a sponge stuffed under the strings at the bridge. That and the flat wound stings really produce the vintage sound I need for the 40's and 50's tunes we play.

It doesn't sound exactly like an upright bass.
... but I'm getting close. And a heck of a lot easier to lug around and a joy to play.

I got it in trade for a vintage Dan Armstrong bass (clear plastic body) that I bought for $600 in 1971 as a teenager (and I had really hammered it playing in a rock band until 1978 when life made me too busy to play). By 1995 the hammered Dan Armstrong had been in my closet collecting dust for years and I wanted to start playing again but it sounded like crap.

So I took it to a vintage guitar store in Salt Lake City and showed it to the owner of the store. He really wanted the Dan Armstrong (even though it sounded like crap) and offered me any guitar in the store. I tried them all but didn't like any of them. He finally brought this one out from the back room, and it was love at first sight. I traded the Dan Armstrong straight across for it (and a new hard shell case). I think this bass was about 5 years old at the time (by the serial number I think it was made around 1990), but it was in perfect condition and even still had the new tags hanging from the keys.

I probably should have kept the Dan Armstrong and dug up the money to buy this, but I fell instantly in love with it's classic P-Bass sound and it just really seduced me. I don't regret it. I really love this bass. I use it for every gig.

You can remove the sponge from the bridge and use string mutes as Fender did with the early Jazz Basses in the early 1960's.

True .... but many like the sponge trick 'cuz it's easily removed and not permanent. Some only use it on certain songs during a gig.

It's possible to install the mutes on any Fender bridge? I don't know if Fender offers the string mute option for five and six-string basses.

Hi folks,

First post here for me. I was surfing around and found this topic. I too have a P-Bass Plus in black with a maple neck. I bought it new in '89 or '90 and it has been my main bass ever since, I'll never sell it.

Well...it will cause the bass to go out of tune a little when you pull it out, so if you have time to tune between songs you could do this.

I either leave it in for the whole gig, or leave it out so that I don't need to re-tune mid-gig.

I've looked into the various mute products and I'm sure they work fine. I just don't want to put screw holes in my bass to install them and the mute sound from a $.79 sponge is the same as the sound from a $79 accessory, albeit the purple sponge is rather ugly.

I've got a 1994 white-ish Jazz Plus. I'd like to have some info on this(as I've posted elsewhere here at Fender.com). The treble knob doesn't work at all. The rest of the Kubicki settings work just fine though. Must be the treble pot, right?

The bass is incredible, even so. The bridge is much better than a Leo Bad*ss for sustain, seriously. It stays in tune all day, the threaded brass inserts...active/passive option....nice.

If this isn't solved yet - I have a couple of pixs of the best material I have found for mutes:::

I used some neoprene weather stripping and it works very well, doesn't fail after a while and can be removed very easily - although in this situation, I have to pull the cover off the bridge.

I even put it on an old P I had around with ROTO 77s on it::

Did the 2-way toggle on your red P-Bass serve as a series/parallel switch?

Just wondering if anyone out there knows if the maple neck on the P-Bass Plus is a Jazz neck, or just a maple Precision neck?

Thanks for any insight.
