I am researching methods of muting my Precision bass having previously experimented with the Fender ashtray (with rubber muting) and varying degrees and methods of piano felt.

Please weigh in with any suggestions / experiences you've had with bass muting.

With many thanks -

Great. Thanks for the warm welcome and for the link. I took a brief look at the web page, and I'm looking forward to checking it out more fully after the holiday.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond and best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm using foam under the strings as close to the bridge as possible, the further out you go, thew less sustain. I've also used felt, WalMart special.

All my advice came from Brother Dave, when I went to the flats and desired the Jamerson sound he was all the help I needed.

There are a lot of factors that will affect your sound, experiment, experiment, experiment.

I've never found a quick fix.

Have fun.

When I can get the same or even better results with free packing foam chunks under rounds and 80 cent felt wraps on flats, I just can't see spending "Bass Mute" kind of money.

Yeah they are nice and about $140 delivered to the USA.

Also, if you are like me and use bridge covers on your Fender basses you'd have to leave them off.

I have two questions about the bassmute.com device for anyone who uses one. Their website doesn't say, so how are they installed? Where do you get replacement rubber for the mute pads? Thanks!

They stick on or screw on. You can get replacements from them.

I took an old t-shirt, cut about a foot length strip, and wrapped it around the strings near the bridge a few times to get a nice bass fiddle "thump" when playing.

I got the bassmute about 18 months ago. It costs a bit but is much better than fannying about with bits of this that and the other....and it looks good.

The bassmute has 3 settings...off,on a bit, and full on....depending on how you set it up and the choice is yours.

I've stuck it on my p bass next to the bridge using quality double sided sticky foam pads cut to size and it stays there. The mute comes with a screw down option but the pads do the trick just fine....so, if you ever want to remove it you won't damage anything.

Some chap in Holland makes them: http://www.bassmute.com/

Thank you to all who have taken the time to respond to my post about bass muting and special thanks to BrotherDave for your informative article about muting methods. I've tried using felt before but never utilized the wrapping method. I am eagerly anticipating giving that method a try.

All the best -

Hey,

I just use my hand with a pick. What other methods are there?

Thanks,

Kieran.

Weather stripping, and an ash tray.
