Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me what gear was used to create that monster tone in the bass line for 'the middle' by jimmy eat world. I'm pretty certain a fender p-bass was used but does anyone now what amp/strings etc. he used/uses? I'm not a huge fan and it's the simplest of songs but the tone of the bass really makes this song great. Thanks for any info :D

You can get that tone on just about any good amp. All you have to do is set the tone on the bass on full and mess around with the EQ on the amp a little bit.

Yeah, that tone is not that hard to replicate.

Rick Burch plays bass for Jimmy Eat World. He uses your basic black P-bass with a maple fretboard and white pickguard at most gigs, however he also has been photographed with a sunburst MusicMan and I sort of suspect he records with the MusicMan or another active bass on some if not all tracks. The recordings sound like an active bass to me.

It sounds like he has the midrange boosted, with a lot of emphasis on the low mids (around 400 hrz). If you have an amp with just a mid control, pump that baby. If it has more than one mid control, put emphasis on the low mids, and if it's a graphic eq, set the controls to a frowny face with the peak around 400 hrz.
