Hey guys, I'm gonna ask another question on the standard p bass. I was just thinking the price must have gone up lately. What was the usual price and what is it now. Also should I buy it now or wait for prices to go down. And while I'm posting a topic I'll throw in does the brown sunburst look good? And would you suggest the rosewood or maple board. These are my real final questions, this will decide if I buy it or not!
Thanks, Will P

Prior to the Standards being revamped/upgraded, the pricing of a P-Bass was around $429 or $449. After the release of the 2009 Standards, which was late last year, pricing was at $599 - $649 I believe. And then there was a price drop earlier this year down to the current $549. I don't see the prices being dropped again, but always haggle whenever buying a new bass. I have never paid anywhere close to the advertised price on any of the basses that I have owned.
I am not a fan of the Brown Sunburst.
Maple with Black, CA Red, LP Blue
Rosewood with LP Blue, White, Brown Sunburst.

I agree with Zod on the pricing probability. I expect USA list prices to go up if and when the economy improves. Even if the economy stays depressed list prices in the USA will eventually have to go up due inflation. There has never been a decrease in Fender list prices before that I can recall.

On a fretless bass fingerboard material makes a substantial tonal difference. Maple being harder has more zing while softer woods such as rosewood have a more mellow tone. On a fretted bass the fretboard material has far less tonal impact since the string is contacting the metal fret instead of the wood. There is though still a very subtle resonance difference on fretted instruments. Once you roll the tone control back from full on I can hardly tell them apart.

After years and years of steady use maple will show some discoloration and surface wear, especially if setup with roundwound strings. Rosewood also wears but masks wear better due to the darker color.
