depends on what you play, and you're style...

hmm... you play with a pick??
stainless steel rounds would sound aggressive and would suit better for punk and hard rock... but there are also flats that are warm and punchy like D'Addario Chromes Chaney of Jane's Addiction uses them as well as Justin, bassist for Beck, Nine Inch Nails... etc

Zod made some worthy recommendations. However I would add others.
Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass (personal favorite string)
Fender 7350 Stainless Rounds (edgy & punchy)
Fender 9050M Stainless Flats (bright sounding flats)
GHS 3050 (Regular Gauge) Stainless Flats (Old School tone)

String reviews and recommendations are filled with words like "the best" and "best tone" and "feel." All that is subjective. What strings I like you may not like at all. (Zod tried a set I like on my '51 RI P-bass and he didn't like them at all.) Eye Candy has the idea. Find the recording Precision player with the tone you want and then find out what strings they use and try those.

The gauge of the string does matter. Larger gauge = fatter sound but almost always also means higher tension. Funk & Fusion players tend to use lighter gauges. Also the gauge size impacts the intonation, so when changing gauges you have to make larger truss rod, intonation and saddle height adjustments. Overall it is best to find one string set you like and stick to it.

In general flats are higher tension than rounds (with the exception of the Thomastik-Infeld JF344 set which has such low tension that some players say they are almost too floppy.)

FWIW Chris Chaney has not played with Jane's Addiction since 2004, and *Justin* does not use chromes with NIN, only halfs and rounds.

Like brotherdave said, "What strings I like you may not like at all." Just spend the money and find the ones that you like. A good place to check for both new and used strings is the TB Classifieds.

oh well.. i just saw an ad on youtube featuring Justin Meldal Johnsen, (my mistake) using chromes in his 66 p-bass for about 4 years... but there was also some vids where he featured the half rounds and nickels..

JMJ does use Chromes, just not with NIN. Love those videos of him. He is a great bassist, and I love the fro(when he has it).

I like D'Addario EXL 160's. They've got a great piano-ish sound to them.
