Here's how I'm breaking it down:

Steve Harris - The neck on this one is by far the best I've seen. I'd rather see the string-through on this. The fact it doesn't come with a case isn't that much of a big deal for me. I also love Iron Maiden

American Deluxe - I love the styling of Fender Am. Deluxe guitars. I also really like the bridge humbucker. Really no cons here.

American Standard- What can I say, it's an American Standard. I'm not too big on the color options, but that's it.

I'm not leaning one way or another, but these are my top 3 choices. I'm sort of stuck in my decision making. Help!!

I'd vote American Standard + pickup change.. well i'm a passive guy and I'd like a vintage sounding one...

If I do decide to go the American Standard route, do I really need to make a pickup change? Are you saying the pickup isn't vintage sounding for you?

I think I want something I'm not going to mod.

My 1st choice would be the American Deluxe in Amber/Rosewood, maybe Black/Maple.
2nd choice would be the American Standard in Charcoal Frost Metallic/Maple.

And if I was to get any of these basses, I would not think of changing the pick-ups.

Thanks zod, I think I'm zeroing in on the Deluxe in Sunburst/Maple. Black/Maple is a very close second. I've seen that Montego Black up close and it is an eye catcher. I can't get past the gold pickguard though. It can be changed, I know, but I'd rather not have to change anything.

IMO Sunburst looks way better with Rosewood, but that's my opinion, it's gonna be your bass. The white pg would have to go too. Slap a tort pg on there = classic.
As far as black, I am not a fan of gold pg's either. Definately slap a black pg on a black body.

Be sure to post some pics once you get it!!!

It's actually not white, it's mint  I know, it LOOKS white. I kind of like it though.

Thanks again!

I really need to think about this. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Am Dlx now. Now, I think I might want the Montego Black and the gold pickguard is growing on me. :? Even if I wanted a black pickguard, I don't think Fender makes one for the Dlx. I guess I would have to go aftermarket if that's the case.

Another thing; I've read that the Deluxe is lighter than the Standard. Is this the case, or is it just better balanced? I've picked them both up, and I can't really tell a difference in weight.

sorry for the late reply...

well IMO modern Standard basses stress on the Bottom and Low Mid range than Vintage pickups that stress on the High Mids..
well a Standard Precision Bass is good and it doesn't really need modification..

back then i was considering of getting an MIM Jazz bass and swapping it with vintage pickups.. but now I'd gig with stock basses.. they're ok

Yeah, modding an American Standard is a waste of money, time, and effort. IMO

I just have to say, if you do intend on choosing the Am. Deluxe, understand that you are getting an active bass. Active basses are a whole different animal than passive basses. You're not gonna get classic vintage p-bass tone from an active bass, and fender preamps tend to color the tone a LOT.

Also, someone made the comment that modding an Am. Standard bass is pointless. I don't think it's pointless at all. The pickups sound different than a vintage bass from the 50's or 60's (which in turn sound different from each other). There is nothing wrong with the Am. St. pickup, it's just not necessarily what everyone wants. And I agree with Eyecandy's assessment that modern = low mid focus and extended trebble, where vintage = more high mid with slightly less range of trebble.

I'd agree with anubis on this.. the american standard has a different tone than vintage... and if you're looking to nail the old school tone with a slightly higher price than deluxe... the AV (American Vintage Series is the Classic) and my personal favorite..

I appreciate everyone's responses in the thread. I've decided to get the Am Dlx. When it comes down to it, I like the styling and the versatility.

Again thanks, and I will post pics later in the week.
