So, the serial niumber is on the peg head and it's a decal ( I found out that is important) but a lot of the numbers are worn off and there are 5 groups of 6 numbers. I can't read much of the first group of numbers.Guitar Center could not help track the instrument through their system. Am I ever going to be able to find out what the year (value) of this bass is?

First of all if it has a 3 bolt neck then chances are its a 70s-ish instrument.

Anyway, take off the neck, there should be a date stamped/written on the heel of the neck/in the neck pocket.

You can also use the pot codes to determine a rough date using the guitar dater project (google it).

Good luck with it, there are many other characteristics you can use to get a rough idea of age but sometimes you can just never pin point it :(

2nd, if it's a 3-bolt neck, it isn't a Precision...they never had them.

An old one, no. A modern re-issue has the 3-bolt done correctly. There was never anything wrong with it, it was one of Leo's good ideas. Just that CBS screwed up the implementaion somewhat...
