hey guys I' m just wondering if there are any rules or proper string height adjustment? i checked various website and yet they'd give me different things.. i tried setting up a high action.. e.g. 1/8" on my E and 3/32 on the G no problem with them... but i experience major problems with the D string... especially when popping the 9th fret... it gives an awful buzz... the saddle height is rather high instead of 7/64" its rather high but buzzes occur... its hardly noticeable when playing fingering mellow.. but when popped, it sounds awful..

While there are rules and suggestions, do what works for you. No two basses are exactly alike and no two bassists are exactly alike.

Do what makes your playing easier.

How straight is the neck? Really straight? Is this at standard EADG tuning?

yes i always tune to standard and i use light ernie ball nickels 40/60/70/95

the first time i turned the truss rod... it sorta backbowed... then the 2nd small turn.. still have some buzz on the open notes... then another quarter turn solved it..

currently it has a slight bow... no problem with the E and A string.. only the D and G, the G string has a bit tamer buzz than the D string..

no buzz from the upper frets of the D and G.. going from the 7th down to the 9th experience buzzing noise... i can get away with in on fingerstyle playing but sounds like hell when popped..

i followed sadowsky's high set up... but i took it to the tech earlier and he's saying that the action was low.. but its already 1/8 bass side and 3/32 on the treble side when i depress the 1st fret and measure the 12th fret from the string..

The reason I asked if it was perfectly straight is because you might need just a little more relief. So loosen the truss rod a hair and see if that helps. The tech that set it up should be able to fix it if you tell him what it is doing.

i got home disappointed actually... the buzz is still there... the tech told me that its because the string is new.. and i noticed he didn't touch the heights still 1/8", 3/32"... the previous set up was i think higher than 1/8",i thought he know what he was doing.. then he told me to observe in about 2 weeks if buzzing still occurs.. *sigh*, no matter how high the D string goes.. that annoying buzz would never go away..

Well that sucks. I'd get a second opinion from another tech.

Bummer, he is the only person i could talk to as for now, as i don't like to talk to the other one who doesn't even know what jaco bass is..
yet talks big about it..

i called back and complained.. saying that buzz does irritate me for some reason.. he said i should bring it by sunday..

well for the updates, i adjust the saddles higher... and feels like the tension is stiffer the buzz does become thinner as the tension.. do you think i should raise my action? like i already have 1/8" but still i feel like the E string isn't that stiff either..

funny at first i wanted lighter gauge strings since they're softer and great for popping but this gave me a lot of headache..
