Hey guys I'm thinking of putting in GHS Precision flat mediums on the bass... but still having doubts that higher tension results to warping... any strings and gauges to watch out or damage the neck?

I usually tune to standard play a little funk and blues... my current set is Ernie Ball Extra Slinky and Fender 7250 on the other... I was thinking of putting GHS flats in one of them for a different sound..

I had a set of the GHS flats, the 3050s 55-105, and completely hated them. They were on for about 5 minutes, if that.
If you are worried about high tension, try the LaBella 760fl or the TI jazz flats JF344.

they give me the creeps..

I wanted to look for those labellas and TI's.. but here its hard to find those...

normally on the shops they have GHS, Ernie Ball and D'Addarios.. and as for flats D'Addario Chromes and GHS

Zod if you still have those GHS 3050's I'll buy them from you. Contact me through my website. Could use some precut spares! Dave

Yes. Sounds exactly like this:
http://brotherdave.com/audio/sweetsoulbrodavebassghs3050demo.mp3

I was working on that song on the Fender 51 RI with the GHS flats when I took a break and saw your question. So I loaded the recorder software so you can hear what they sound like. These are GHS 3050 REGULARS which are the big ones. Has to say REGULAR on the package. 55-70-90-105 is what they are. This 51 RI has a Lindy Fralin split coil, Sprague Vitamin-Q 0.047 cap and a Badass III bridge. This is the only bridge I could get that would intonate 100% dead right on this particular bass.

As you can see I don't have any trouble playing them, just getting the song right. LOL. This is not stage ready, but gives you an idea of the sound of the strings.

you're playing and tone never fails to amaze me brotherdave...

how are the regulars and the mediums compare to each other?
well obviously medium tend to be lighter in tension but does it affect the tone?

I'm still having thoughts on what to use.. either the Precision flats light gauge, D'Addario chrome 40-95 or precision flats medium

I actually had a set of 3025's on this same bass first for about a week but they wouldn't intonate correctly with the Fender USA Deluxe bridge I had put on it. Took it to my Guru Tech who said loading the Regulars might fix the intonation issue, it didn't so next I did the bridge change to the BadAss III with longer saddle travel and it fixed it. On this bass the lighter GHS 3025 strings have more of a snap to them than a thump and the G string sounds less dense (more thready) compared to the 3025's meatier G string tone. If you play funk and want flats the lighter 3025's would be one option. The tension on the 3025's is lower of course and they are more flexible but nothing like the TI JF3344's on my active bass. On the audio sample I posted all four strings are in play so you can hear how the strings balance. Tone is set about one-quarter turn toward treble.

I still have the 3025's. If you would like to try this used set of 3025's drop me a line through the contact page at my website in my forum signature below. They are cut to fit a 51 P using a BRIDGE-THROUGH setup, but should work on any bridge through P-bass set up. If you are stringing through the body they probably would not work.

Another point I should bring up about flats is that some flats like the Labella specifically say right on the package not to use body through stringing which is why I put on the Fender Deluxe bridge in the first place.

currently i have the stock standard chrome bridge on the mim's..

its a bit hard for me to decide which gauge to use since I've so gotten used to light gauge rounds and a middle high action.. and sound does affect the gauges.. we shifted some songs from acid jazz to psychadelic rock ala jimi hendrix and there and some chili pepper tracks, so i kept some nickel rounds for back ups, plus the medium lights so far were the thickest strings i've ever used and i don't think it worked for me... during my earlier months of playing.. I liked it esp the 7250 stock, but when i finally got my own bass.. it didn't work out for me.. i immediately changed the strings a week after i got one..

then after some time we decided to play some jazz and blues tunes.. so the thing that came to my mind.. flats.. i was wondering whether lighter flat strings would actually sound bad for blues.. as much as I'd want to look for TI flats... they're nowhere to find here.. (Philippines) and shipment would cost much for just 1 pack of strings

Well look on the sunny side of life! If you could order two sets, one to play and one for the unlikely event of string breakage, you'd be set for years. TI Jazz Flats last for years.

I just love using LaBella 760fl. They are actually pretty much all that I've used so far. The others that I've tried paled in comparison.

I was going to recommend a dealer but checked on their international shipping and it costs $40.00 to ship international. That is crazy! Can't recommend that.

Next I checked http://elderly.com/welcome.htm who carries only the Jamerson 760M Labella Flats but not the FL set. You can't get a shipping quote without setting up an account there so you might try that. It almost has to be more reasonable than the other source I checked, but the other source sells about everything.

You are right, you may be better off to find some there and learn to love them, especially if you have to pay import duties or taxes on top of the outrageous shipping cost

brotherdave whats the name of the dealer that charges $40?

$40 without the taxes? my thoughts exactly about the shipping costs, thats when i was looking for Rotosound and DR rounds locally but the local store, since there's only one guitar accessory store here.. they'd only carry GHS, D'addario and Ernie Ball.. and news after being struck by the flood, GHS supplies were wiped out and shipment will be in about 2-3 months...
I'm stuck with D'addarios and Ernie Ball.. the only flats that would be available here would be the Chromes..

elderly.com sells some nice strings but the lighter gauges aren't available either.. well i think its gonna be the same especially the taxes

and I don't think I'd like the Jamerson set... those are too heavy for me

The $40 international shipping is at a place I do business all the time and their link is:
http://www.juststrings.com/
Nobody has a bigger selection of pro caliber bass strings and they have Labellas, TI's and about everything else except R. Cocca USA made strings that I need or want to try. Other than the R. Cocca they have everything covered. For R. Cocca I know of only one online source right now and that is: http://www.bassemporium.com/bass_emporium.php?R.%20Cocco%20Strings I'm sort of hung up on trying the R. Cocca's as my next roundwound in an experiment to see if I can abandon the Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass Rounds which is my favorite string OF ALL TIME but they just keep getting more and more expensive due to the terrible US Dollar versus Euro exchange rate since you are buying a product made in Austria.

Right now, Elderly has the best deal on Labella Jamerson 760's: http://elderly.com/welcome.htm because if you order two sets they are just $26.10 each if you buy two packs. I've ALSO found where they do indeed sell the 760FL set here: http://elderly.com/brand/STBS_labella.html SO my APOLOGY for saying they didn’t have the FL set because they have that set and more. They even have the 30" set. I had to PLUNDER a while before I found that page. Elderly's Labella prices are way below any other online Labella outlet that I can find. Why are websites so hard to navigate folks?

AND Carole Kay usually has the best price on Thomastik-Infeld JF344's at $4 under most online dealers. These are special ARTIST PACK strings and they are specially packaged the OLD TIME way in special endorsing artist packaging. These are probably the best version of the JF344's that TI makes. I made the mistake of ordering elsewhere once and they arrived in a BLISTER PACK which won't fit in my guitar cases as easily. Carol's site at http://www.carolkaye.com is a tad difficult to navigate. Go to her home page and click CATALOG then in the drop down box drill down to ACCESSORIES. Under 51 bucks! You can click the following shortcut to get to her TI JF344 deal. You might want some of the other items too, like her incredibly thick picks. (Now is also a good time to get her autographed photo too.)
http://www.carolkaye.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23

There is so much about strings on the forum here I probably should add a page just for strings to my bass website. Maybe I'll work on that over the weekend.
