I would go and play both and make a decision from that.

I'd take a precision.

I agree with CAFeathers. try both. jazz basses are good as they offer a wider tonal variety than a precision bass, but precisions give that solid sound from the split pickup which i feel jazz basses cannot replicate.

I've alway preferred a Precision Bass, but get what feels better to you.

They are two very different basses, the jazz bass is much more versatile but the precision bass has a punch that can't be beaten in my opinion. The neck on a precision bass is wider at the nut, therefore widening the string spacing too, many people find this uncomfortable and choose a jazz over a precision because they prefer a tighter string spacing.

For what it's worth, I don't know any hard rock/metal guys who play a Jazz - only Precision. If you want to focus on this kind of music, I think the PBass is the one for you. If you hope to get flexible down the road and do some other things, the Jazz might work.

Actially, I play on a Jazz-Bass and I play Rock&Roll, but I actially don't care, because we play like some classical rock så the tone in the Jazz-Bass is beatiful to this type of music.. and I can use it to play Heavy to.. but then I usually have some effects on.. :P
