Hi - I've been playing for about a year now - I have a 07 Mexico P-Bass and I also have a 2005 Orange Sunset Ash American P-Bass w/S1 switching and a strung through and top loading strings.

My question is - and I know it's a dumb one - but the original strings are still on the bass and they are strung through the body (I purchased the bass from another person who never changed them nor really played the instrument since it was bought in 05) and I have no clue how to get the strings out of the body... how do I go about getting them out? I plan on restringing through the top once I can get the older ones out. I could not find any manual or video to help me on how to remove them from the body... can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Welcome to the forums. We would love to see some pictures of your basses.

It is an easy process. Have you changed any strings before? Simply unwind the strings with the tuning pegs, and as the tension is released, the ball ends will start to "fall" through the ferrules in the body. Once the string has completely unwound from the peg, you carefully pull the strings through the body, watching that you do not scratch your bass with the string ends. Install the new strings, and you're done. Putting new strings on may require you to do a set-up on your bass.

If you have never done that, or do not feel comfortable doing that, you should take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Generally around $30 - $50 depending on your area. If you do it yourself, and you have to adjust the truss rod, only turn at the most 1/4 of a turn at a time; meaning after a turn, let the neck adjust to the turn for several hours or longer.

Hope this will help.

Thanks for your help with that - I have changed strings on the Mexico P before. I unwound the E String on the 05 strung through bass this evening and I tried for about 10 minutes to get the string out of the inside of the bass but it would not budge - it's still hung up somewhere inside lol. I kept twisting it in different directions hoping it would release but it didn't. I put the string back on and retuned it - I'll wait until I actually break a string I think before I'll take it to someone to help me get them out of there lol. I have a Sam Ash nearby but I have never had any kind of cooperation with them when I've asked them to restring when I was in the building - they always want me to leave it for a day which is frankly quite unacceptable to me - especially if I bring the one that is strung through to be changed - I really need to see how they get those things out lol.

IMO it sounds like it is "hung up" in there from the tension and the amount of time that the string has been on there. Maybe try it again and use some light force when pushing the string through, from the top of the body(pick ups side). It should come "undone".

just grab the strings on the top side with a pair of needle nose pliers about an inch above the hole and push the string through. i always cut the string off to avoid scratches. never try to push the curly ends through!

Thanks everyone. I brought it to a small music shop and they showed me how to restring and adjust my bridge I didn't realize you strung it through the back side of the bass lol - I even managed to break an E string yesterday so I put a new one on myself! Thanks for everyone's input!
