For me up until a few years ago the Ampeg SVT Classic through an SVT 6x10HLF or 8x10 was the end all be all. However then I discovered Orange. The Orange AD200 IMHO has to be the purest sounding all tube bass amp that I have ever heard. The biggest drawback is the price although they have come out with a hybrid version called the Terror Bass which will go for slightly less then half the price of the AD200. As far as cabs go I like 10's lots of them. What does everyone else think?

Orange is the sh*t!! The sound is amazing...but the price, you're correct. I like Ashdown, Hartke (obviously - that's what I have), Carvin for sure too.

Eden works very well. I also like peavey because they can really show the darkness of it's lows better than any other brand. I only like orange cabs, the heads do not work for me, unless you give me a SWR or Ampeg pre-amp and an active bass. Personally I think ampeg SVT is the shiz and does as good of a job as eden. (Peavey is still better IMO)

Agreed on both points! That piece of junk Peavey you sold for $50 is still being played by some kid in a garage with his pals!! My 1st amp was a Peavey Basic 50, 50w of fury  For what it was, it served its purpose!!

That's funny because my first bass amp was a 30watt Peavey Minx. I later upgraded to a 300watt MarkIV head (peavey) through a peavey 1810 cab. those were the days.

My current rig is an Ampeg B2R through an Ampeg 6x10HLF. I like the cab although portability can be a pain not crazy about the head. When I bought it it was supposed to be a stopgap until I got an Ampeg V4BH or an SVT which 6 years later still hasn't happened. I doubt it ever will since Ampegs are now mostly made outside the US their QC has gone down the toilet. I'm giving serious thought to either the Peavey VB2 or the Traynor YBA 200 and am thinking about just going with a 4ohm 4x10 by Avatar.

mmmmmmmm...Avatar....Cool...Yeah, that's what a lot of Ampeg fans are saying, the made in Viet Nam stuff is not up to par on the old quality. I like Hartke myself, since it's affordable and has decent quality, plus Larry has been a godsend when answering questions - how many owner of amps would do that :) I emailed him on a Sat morning - 2am, got a reply @ 0630 Sat morning, now that's customer service!! As long as he's alive I'm obligated to buy his product.

Thats cool. I didn't know that about Harke. Ever since I tried an all tube SVT that was it for me and then the situation got worse after I heard the Orange LOL. Who knows what the future will hold for me amp wise.

As to what amp/cab rig sounds best with a P-Bass, I think that is a personal taste sort of thing and what I like might not work for anyone else at all. I like 15 inch speakers with a P-bass and will always have at least one in the mix somewhere. I also like 10’s for punch and I like horns but I keep the horns dialed back to about 50%. Even when dialed down the horns still add something when you crank up the instrument's tone control but I like a lush vintage tone most of the time. People playing a P-Bass usually are not looking for a modern tone. I know the trend today is away from 15’s, but if you’ve had one around for 41 years and play old school stuff like me, it is hard to take them out of the stack altogether because it just doesn't sound right without them.

It is interesting to see Peavey users here. Peavey used to be looked down upon and to some extent I think still is considered second rate in some circles. Well I have a Peavey Century 200 (100 watt bass head) that weights about 40 pounds. I bought it new in 1976 with a 2x15 cab and have never done a thing to it but play it. It could use some spraying of a couple of pots now but still works fine. I sold the cab shortly after I got it because it was just too big. I always used the Peavey head as a rehearsal amp because it is only 100 watts, but now it is only a backup since I switched to using combos at rehearsals about 5 yrs ago. The Peavey goes to gigs waiting patiently for my Ampeg head to die. Every month or two I'll fire it up just to make sure it still works. 33 years of continuous service with no trouble ever and it sounds pretty good for a 100 watt head too. How is that possibly second rate? I never understood the Peavey haters.

I have gigged exclusively with Ampeg heads since 1971. However my next gig head will be either a CARVIN B1500 or a FENDER BASSMAN 300, because the Asian made Ampegs, as previously noted in this thread and elsewhere on this and other forums, are notoriously unreliable. I sort of baby my current USA Ampeg head, but I'm not stupid enough to think it will last forever. So far I’ve been lucky in that I’ve managed to replace my heads before they die.

Lately I’ve sort of been weighing my options for what is probably my last gig head. Here is where I am on the “Last Rig” plan. The Fender Bassman 300 is a really good amp and so is the Carvin B1500. Right now I’m torn between these two heads.

My current cabs are two Avatar 8 ohm cabs. One is a 1x15 (300 watt) Neo cab which I dearly love and the other is a 2x10 (700 watt) Delta cab which is pretty heavy so it is easy to see why Avatar switched to all Neo speakers. Both the Avatar cabs have a Foster horn. While I’ve been happy with them and do plan to keep them I know that if I buy the high power Carvin head I’ll need to add more cabs or bigger cabs. In that event I have already decided on buying two 8 ohm Dr. Bass Cabs for my last rig purely because Avatar has discontinued offering a 15 inch cab of any sort. So I’m planning on buying a Dr. Bass 1x15 and a Dr. Bass 2x10 or 3x10 if I go the Carvin head route. I would then use all four cabs when outdoors for a 2 ohm load which either amp can handle.

However I would not need additional cabs with the Fender 300. So while the Fender 300 is twice as heavy and costs over twice as much, the smaller and more economical rig would be the Fender 300 rig which would require only 2 cabs and I could even use the existing Avatar cabs for a while longer. Decisions, decisions.

Gnosticbasss brought up Avatar cabs. As an Avatar owner for four years I can say that they are better than any main line cab out there, but that Dr. Bass cabs have some edges over Avatars. For anyone considering Avatar cabs, I'd encourage you to also consider Dr. Bass cabs. See which fits your needs best. You may never have heard of them but here are the Dr. Bass advantages that I've found. A- Two Speak-On jacks per cab. (Avatar has one.) B- A choice of speaker upgrades. (Avatar only offers the standard Neo.) C- Armor coating is standard. (An Avatar upgrade.) D- Five different 15 inch cab designs with a promised sixth 15 design coming! (Avatar no longer makes a 15.) E- The "Airhead" cab option adds a built-in rack mount to the top of the cab. (Not available from Avatar.) F- "Slant" cab option which angles the speakers slightly upward. (Again, not available from Avatar.) I've played two different Dr. Bass stacks at festivals and in my estimation Dr. Bass cabs are the best compact cabs out there and unfortunately I didn't find that out until just after I had bought two Avatars. While I recommend both Avatar and Dr. Bass as being excellent values on my bass website, my next cabs will be definitely be Dr. Bass.

Well said as usual BrotherDave!!!

I don't know why people hate on Peavey amps, I did it to I guess when I got rid of mine...maybe like me, everyone else first cheap amp was a Peavey, and they don't realize how good the more expensive Peavey amps are ;) I learned :D

I do like Carvin like I said before, great old skool sound coming from it. I also like Orange, but from there the boutique amp prices get a little ridiculous for me, so I always thought, buy the most expensive you can afford - and sounds good to your taste, then you won't regret it. I also like the thump of 15" subs, that's why I have it. I would like to have 4x10 instead of my 2x10, but I don't really need it now since not gigging anymore...I will if I go gigging again :D.

That was the way of the world as Peavey gear went. I played my Peavey rig for 8 years and the only reason I got rid of it was I needed the space. I upgraded more or less to a Tube Works RT-3315 combo and played that right up to 2006. I used it primarily as a rehearsal amp and used the Ampeg rig as my gigging amp. I sold the Tube Works again to make a little room but soon there after my wonderful wife bought me an Orange Crush 35B practice amp which I find myself using a lot more these days. I really would like to try the Peavey VB2 out but I'm not really in any hurry.

I used to have a Yorkville BM400 or something like that. Probably one of the best bass amps I've ever owned. That sounded great with a MIA P bass, but at the same time I agree with BrotherDave, it's all a matter of taste. I've been tinkering with the GK700, probably going to be my next amp. That thing sounds solid especially with a 410 and 115.

Does anyone else have experience with Yorkville?

Since I just recently got my P-bass I honestly forgot how great sounding a good P-bass can be even through a less then stellar amp. Even my little Orange Crush 35B sounds great paired with my new P-bass. I can only imagine what kind of sound I will get when I get something like the Peavey VB-2 or Traynor YBA-200.

The Orange Crush 35B is a wonderful sounding small amp for the money. Miked it sounds pretty amazing when recorded actually. I'd like to have one just to fool around with at home. Usually little amps aren't that smooth sounding.
