Hello,

I posted this in the "other bass" forum but they suggested I post here.

I just grabbed this bass really cheap with a broken off input that I repaired. I thought I would check into it since the previous owner thought it was old and it's pretty sturdy/heavy. I've taken it to a few shops who thought it felt Fender, but I'm not sure what to make of it.

As someone else noted, it looks like it was routed to put Jazz Bass pickups into a Precision with some aftermarket pickguard (why?). I don't know about these pickups either. I didn't see anything stamped on the end of the neck, and obviously there are no visible "Fender" logos. The serial dates to the mid-50's?

Any idea about this? Thanks.

Something about that neck looks "off" to me. It doesn't look like it's the right length. I'm no expert though. Just tossing in my two cents.

well, obviously the neck is not Fender, no decals. The body... it's hard to tell. The routs are definitely aftermarket, and bridge pickup looks like it's in the 70's position, maybe even closer to the bridge than that.

For those interested, I refreshed the bass a bit. Took it to another shop too. The tech thought that the pickups were old Dimarzio's. I did a bit more searching and I think they may be Schaller JBX. I though about putting p-bass pickups up top with a bridge j-bass, but kept it as is for now. Because of the cuts I had to keep the pickguard the same shape, but cut one in black so that it is less in-your-face. Also replaced all the old pots which were pretty worn. Everyone who has picked it up really loves the neck, but I still can't ID it.

Also, I compared it to a current P-Bass on the shelf. VERY similar with a few differences. They were the same height, same neck height, but mine actually weighs a bit more. The neck is a bit fatter (not in width but front to back). Also, the body seems a little bit fatter as well in areas.

The body could be Fender from the 80's to early 90's. The pickups seem to be Dimarzios. The pickguard could be made to be more Precision like IMO. The small route next to the bridge pickup doesn't look that bad IMO.
The bridge plate is a fake with a low number.

Looks like a Jazzcision to me or it could be a Prejazzion. At any rate someone did a lot of work on it. You may never find out what this is for sure. If it plays ok and sounds ok, then it is what it is, which is a Frankenbass of unknown origin. If a Fender dealer told you it was a Fender, then it probably is. They should be able to tell. Body shapes and neck shapes change. When they went from jigs to CNC the body shape changed a bit for example. They have changed neck shapes more often. If that neck plate turned out to be an original Fender plate I'd be surprised. In the event it was a real Fender neck plate just the plate would probably be worth what you paid for the bass.
