Well, I've been playing bass for about a year now and I found it pretty easy to learn! I've started playing for my church and I'm in a few rock bands around my town but I've got a problem. My first bass that was actually my own (Ibanez GSR 100 Lefty) just isn't holding up, it's falling apart and would cost some serious $$$ to replace everything so I wanna move up to a Precision. The problem lies in that I've only had this bass for about 4 months and my parents don't like the idea of me getting rid of it. Also, I live in a pretty rural area with not alot of music shops or bassists. What I'm afraid of is that I'll sell my Ibanez and won't find a lefty Precision or another lefty bass. I don't have the money, however, to buy the new bass first or even pay 10% to have it reserved. What do you guys think?

if you can get a lefty P bass off the web for a decent price go for it tbh. How is it falling apart though?

The knobs are all falling off, I tried to put on some strap locks and that screwed the strap buttons up, the neck is loose, one of my tuning pins is about ready to fall off, its all scratched in the front and the paint's been chipped off in the back (it came with the scratches and chips cuz i got it used, ahh, first bass, why not) I don't think the neck's been set in years so it's got a hum like you wouldn't believe.

You could probably fix it up your self but it sounds like a junky bass. Get a nice mexican P bass - it'll last you forever.

Not for nothing, the SR series bass are good basses, the issue with yours is that it's the basic SoundGrear series. The knobs falling off, can be fixed, with glue and some cork. The straplocks, again glue with some tooth picks or wood skewers. Now as far as chips and nicks, you can get it painted again - if you go this route, save up some money and buy a new bass, or newer used bass. If you're going to do electronic, same here, for the money, unless you hold some sentimental value on it, get a newer bass. No harm in getting a Squier either, it doesn't have to be Fender. Good luck with either decision.

Every thing you've mentioned that is wrong with the Ibanez bass is a easy fix. I would fix the Ibanez and start saving for a Fender Precision. Hang on to your first guitar, you'll be glad you did 20 years from now. Check the internet for guitar fix it information. Learn how to repair and adjust your Ibanez, it's a cheap learning tool. You will have to repair and adjust more expensive basses also. I started with a Squire Precison that I still have. I learn how to fix strats by buying a Peavey knock off and fixing it. You should do the same.

I got my MIM P bass from a pawn shop, it was totally ragged out but the pick-ups were strong and clear. Put $30 for a new customized pick guard, $90 for a BadAssII bridge, $30 for Rotosound strings, and had the frets dressed for $90. So for a little over $300 total I have the coolest bass around and would not think about selling it for less than $900. It took me two months to get it all put together and buy the parts.

I'm wondering if your parents are concerned based on how you took careof the Ibanez, and maybe worried that you'll not take care of the new one and will repeat this over & over?

It's hard to say if it would be worth fixing the Ibanez without seeing it, but if you could do that--I think that would go a long way to convincing your parents that you can take care of the bass.

Just do some recon. on a new Fender P-bass. Then make your decision.

I know it sounds caned...though, you can't go wrong with a Fender Precision Bass. It is still a standard for a reason.
