I absolutely love Stings fretless 70s precision basses, the natural and redish one. I modeled one of my precisions after. Does anyone know anything about them? why he chose them, and played fretlesses extensively during tours and records? what has he done with them?

I'm not sure exactly which of Sir Gordon's Fender Precision basses you are talking about. In the pre-Synchronicity days he played so many different basses. He had one natural fretless Ibanez Roadstar I that he played an awful lot and there are lots of photos of him with it.

You can see a bunch of the different basses he has played on this page: http://www.fretlessbass.com/Sting.html
Just click the arrow under the picture to advance to the next one. I see a Warwick, a couple of Ibanez and a Fender or two in there.

Carol Kaye says he has used her tutors and other study materials and she counts him as a student even though he no doubt was already highly skilled and successful before seeking her out. In addition to electric bass he also plays standup bass.

He is fabulously wealthy and would have no need to sell any of his instruments so he probably still has many of them. However he has given a few away as gifts or as donations to charity auctions. He is also very generous with his time when it comes to signing basses for some reason. I've personally seen at least 10 documented authentic Sting signed basses. So there are bound to be hundreds or more of them around. In addition to being a very influential and talented bassist, he is also by all accounts a fine gentleman.

ok guys, I saw Sting at bungalow 8 club 2 days ago. Shook hands, he said he buried his basses :p thats rubbish lool. sting plays with a pick, bt like so what, great bassist, brought it to the front, and is a great singer. and yes brotherdave, i agree with you, he is a fine gentleman! i think the sting signature bass model should be the fretless precision he always played in the late 70s!!!

Agreed. They surely could.

The pick would be an influence of...guess who? Dang it I've tried to play with a pick. It just isn't something I've ever felt comfortable doing except for a brief period in the early to mid 70's. It passed. I just can't play as well with a pick.

I think it's a guitarist thing. It seems everybody who played guitar before bass can play with a pick. I can't, I've always played bass and when I mess around with guitars I use my fingernail. But on guitar I never do anything more than light bar chords. When I try to use a pick on bass my hand cramps up. Which makes me sad because 2 of my 3 pbasses have qp's and qp's sound great with a pick. I try to learn because it could be good to know for some song later on.

My 2 cents

I started a bit of guitars.. so I've gotten used to a pick... back then I was using thin ones 0.46mm and 0.71mm then later tried the heavier ones...

normally i play fingerstyle unless punk rock calls..

Sting = still one of the best there is out there~

I cant speak for Sting but a Fretless is loads of fun to play. I have an AS P-Bass for playing out but I have this Squire Fretless I play around the house. IT'S A BLAST.
