My friend gave me a severly mistreated vintage P-Bass that an ex-boyfriend gave her years ago. I am trying to figure out if it really is a Fender or a weird copy. There is no discernable serial number because it is so screwed up and has been repainted and modified by someone who obviously had no idea what they were doing.

Here is what we have: The headstock is the original 1950s shape... so Tele shaped, which leads me to believe it is a reissue of some kind. It has a truss rod cover that has the Fender F on it. It has a "Made in Japan" neck plate, so I know it was probably made in the 80s. I just don't know when they were doing reissues of P-Basses that were made in Japan. The other thing that is weird is that the fret layout seems slightly different than most other P-Basses I've found from that period. There are 20 frets, and the dot nearest the bottom of the neck (the highest notes) is 3 frets away from the bottom rather than 2.

Please let me know if you can shine some light on if this is a true Fender or what. Whether it is or not, I plan on fixing it and making it into the equivalent of a P-Bass eventually, but I'm going to have to replace like... everything.

A truss rod cover? Not enough frets? I don't think that's a Fender neck.

You know what, I think at some point someone ripped off the fretboard and glued a new one on. It looked like it was loose, so I pried it a bit and it looks like there used to be a different fretboard on it.

This bass is so bad, it's unbelievable. I will be buying a new neck for it. It's going to be my Frankenstein bass.
