After a decade of ownership, finally finding the time to get the MIM Precision ready for use. New bridge installed, setup with LaBella flats, next will be switching out the MIM pup for a proper MIA '62 P-Bass unit.

One other mod I'd in mind was to add a J/Bass pup and broaden the sonic possibilities.

Anyone here done this already? What did you think afterwards?

Thanks,
Joe

I've done it to quite a few P-Basses. Believe me, it wakes the bass up and expands the tonality like there's no tomorrow!

Thanks "M."

How did you handle the added knob? Stack unit?

You're welcome!

No, I added it. I measured the distance between the existing volume and tone pot and the degree of the curve of the pickguard below the existing pots. I then made a template based on these calculations. Next, I positioned the template so the placement of the now third pot would be a continuation in accordance with the template. It looks like a perfect continuation in terms of distance and pickguard curve along with the other two pots. This now third pot is below the pickup on the pickguard. Yes, I did have to rout some wood underneath the pickguard.

Stuff to keep in mind:

Your P-Bass pickup is a humbucker. So, if you add a non-humbucking J-Bass pickup into the mix, you will lose your humbucking mode to the degree that you have the J-Bass pickup dialed in.

A J-Bass pickup believe it or not, is about half the output of a P-Bass pickup. So, although using an 'ordinary' J-Bass pickup will surely broaden your tonality, the P-Bass pickup will still over power it with both pickups' volumes on '10'.

I resolved both these issues simply by putting in a higher output, humbucking J-Bass pickup.

WOW! Looks like I'd be better off handing this over to a pro then. Maybe do some sort of fiddling about with a pair of J-Bass pups tied as "one" unit. Sort of like a humbucker type arrangement.

This weekend I played one of those cheap little Squire VM J's, and was quite surprised by its sound (SD designed jobs on it). Which Jazz pups did you chose?

Yes, it is involved, especially if you want all the new stuff to look like it was, "born" there.

I always use a DiMarzio Model J. It is powerful, dependable, versatile, humbucking and of course, well made. It also can be wired for parallel capabilities just in case it overpowers the given neck pickup or you want a Rickenbacker tonality on command.
