I have a 1978 Jazz Bass and I love it, though I'd love to spend some time getting to know the Precision better. Is the Squier Precision a good approximation in feel and sound or is it better off just to wait a bit longer for an American Standard?

Thanks!

It's basically up to you.. I was into Jazz basses too before I got to know the P-bass.. Back then thumpy tone didn't suit me but hey.. I think you should go on Fenders, it'll save you less on modifications, but if you're planning on playing it at home or for fun.. Squier's would have the same feel but the sound I'd say is a bit far.. and requires a lot of changes

The Squire VM and CV series come pretty close to the Fender sound plus for what they would cost you they are a bargin. I have the same lineup only I have a Highway One P-bass and a VM Jazz as my backup.

How much of a difference is there between the CV and VM series and the Fender Standards from Mexico? There isn't a big difference in price. Are the components the real difference or just where they were made?

What's to say that you wait a little longer and get the MIA P-Bass, and then end up not liking it? IMO go for the Squier VM or CV. I own a VM and absolutely love it. The VM bumped a MIA out of my stable.
There will be some differences in feel and sound, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a Squier, especially if it saves you $700. The P-Bass tone will be there. But hey, it's your money. JMO

Pretty much what Zod said...also, BrotherDave has a theory, that some basses doesn't matter what brand, has a feel to you, might be an MIA, could be an MIM, could be a Squier. Well I'm down to 3 JB's, and 1 of them is a Squier. VM, it sounds a lot like a 70's Jazz, for a lot cheaper. It doesn't have the Fender cache, but I like how it feels when I play it. It's up there with the Fenders that I have.

Whatever you do don't go a MIM over a VM P-Bass. I compared the MIM up against the VM and they were both 30% off. I hated the MIM and loved the VM. I have a HWY1 Jazz Bass as well and the VM feels not quite as smooth as an American made instrument of course but feels better then a MIM. But the tone after the bass is set up properly is awesome coming out of that Squier.

that's a blanket statement tho, the new MIM are pretty good. I always said - can research it here :) - in general MIM are suppose to be better than the Squiers, but look at it this way, the VM is more of a top of the line bass where the MIM's are usually, not all, the entry level offering. My VM JB feels more expensive than my MIM, better vol/vol/tone knobs in feel, better feel altogether, better craftsmanship, but we're also talking 8 yrs newer bass. Try them all out, have fun looking, and get the one that 'feels' the best to you. Hey, it could be that $299 Squier bass instead of the $650 one, or it could be the $1500 MIA, or the used $300 MIM, heck, it could even be the $780 SoundGear bass you happen to tool around at the store...never know, but the point is, find the 'one' you feel is the most connected to you when you play it and that should be the one you buy.

I have to agree with most if not all of the posts. Try a bunch of P-basses out keep in mind the price and how they sound and then go from there. The MIA basses will usually be better made with better QC but the MIM and Squires have come a long way in that area since the early 80's. Let your ears be your guide.

Most definately get your hands on as many basses as possible to try out. What feels great and sounds great to my hands and ears may not and probably won't be the same for you. Individualism.

gnosticbass, all the stuff I said above was not meant to offend you btw :)
I also agree with the MIA statement, except for the mid '80s MIA, when I personally feel the MIJ were built with more quality compared to the MIA.
