I had a friend buy for me what was supposed to be a pre-CBS bass from a Boston music store @1975. It has been in storage for all these years. Loaned it to a friend to try-out and now he wants to buy it.

Says it is NOT pre-CBS.

On the back above the F is 317561

and engraved below the F is H 9523.

Any ideas?

I think the first number given, 317561 above the "F" scripted logo, is the serial number.

Guitar Dater Project at http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx says:
"Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1971"

I don't know what the second number is. Photos of the bass would be nice.

If that is the original neckplate it is not pre-CBS. Sorry.

When I look for a value on a musical instrument or amp, I usually head right to ebay and get an average of what several of the instruments you're trying to sell (or one closest to it) sold for recently. Keep in mind that prices on "vintage" instruments have been dropping like a stone the past six or eight months so if you find one like yours that sold a year ago (not sure you can go back that far on ebay anyway), the price may be much higher then a fair price nowadays. For example, here's one on ebay for around 2 grand but it's been refinished...if your's is all original in an original case, it's probably worth more but you'll have to do your homework...

Without photos about everyone would be hesitant to quote any values. Also values here in NC would be different from values in California or New York and way different from Germany, Ireland or any other foreign country due to import duties, currency exchange rates and other factors. Also originality, condition, original case, finish, body and fretboard woods and other factors all have to be weighed. So it is really impossible to give a range with such limited information and extensive close-up photographs.

Another good place to check is the USED GEAR section of the Guitar Center website at: http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2490663-10432687
And also Gruhn Guitars at: http://www.gruhn.com/

It is no doubt a nice bass to have.

What is sad about that? Might actually be a '64 that sat around a while!
