Hi, all, any recommendations for picks? I have been using a brand I can't find anymore from GC, they were a translucent white with three sides that differed in thickness from each other and had a "dp" logo in the middle, anyone know what brand they are, as well as your own recommendations? thanks!

Picks on a bass?

Seriously though, just the thickest you can find. Carol Kaye sells really thick picks on her website. While extra thick, they are very small. I have a bunch of them. They are as thick as a credit card, but a small teardrop shape. The small size makes them a little hard for a fat fingered ape like me to hang onto, so I play 99% with my fingers.

thanks, brotherdave, I am spending most of my time learning to play with my fingers, but need those picks until I get totally up to speed. I did get a couple of Carol's picks when I bought some of her lesson packages, nice and thick, but a bit too small for me as well...

I started out playing with a pick too, but once I started finger picking I never looked back. I find it so much more satisfying having both hands on the strings.

When I played the most with a pick I actually used the big Fender TRIANGLE tortoise picks in HEAVY the most. That was 40 years ago though. The Fender triangles were not as thick as the Carol Kaye picks but much easier to hang onto. My guitarist son is using the Everly STAR picks with the star cutout in the center of the holding area. I haven't tried any on bass but a big issue with me was always holding them in one place and the star shaped cutout on the Everly Star picks makes them pretty stable. Every now and then I will practice some with a pick but always go back to fingers.

I use the Dunlop tortex .76, but I end up strumming through the bass instead of actually picking it.

I play 99% of the time with my fingers and the other 1% of less I have been using the dunlop 205. Its a thick little pick thats easy to hold on too when I need a little more attack with the sound. The 2nd bassplayer from Fireball Ministry gave me one of her custom made picks of the same model at their show in St. Petersburg Flordia in 2005 and so I went out and bought a few and tried them myself and liked them so have used them eversince.

I will add that I am a finger player 95% of the time.

does anyone have a comment about playability and tone difference between resin (tortex dunlop) or classic (cellu) of similar thickness.
I've been between a fender heavy pick and a tortex 1.14 (purple)/

learned to play with fingers first...but include a some pick playing in my daily practice.

For me, on both guitar and bass (although hardly at all on bass), it's standard Fender (351 style?) heavies. White ones so I can find 'em easier. :)

I use my fingers like 95% of the time as well but I can use picks. I've gone through a couple different ones. first were these huge purple ones called big stubies, lots of grip but not really all that flat, more roundish. I tried a "brain pick" but it wouldn't fit under my pick guard, I tried a flimsy strumming pick( terrible idea), and finally I have these really nice tortex ones. I think there made by dunlop. There blue and the perfect thickness. Never dropped one yet and they just feel right. so you could try out some "Dunlop Tortex picks" if you can or haven't already.
