I have a fenderstien P bass which has developed an AC hum in the wiring, I am the guy who put the wiring in so it is my bad, probably but it worked fine for a couple years, the bass was found in a a used guitar shop with a 64 neck on an 80 body and bartolinis in it, I wanted to make it a classic sounding fender and a friend who had a music store gave me the pickups from a 59 p bass not a reissue a real 59, the covers are starting to chip a little. The wires were degrading pretty bad. I didn't replace the ground wire or the small white wire joining the 2 originally I just put them in and played them, then after a couple years the AC hum came on and since then I have replaced the pots and all the wiring and capacitor but still the AC hum, the pickups measure about 6.3 k each and the loop as back to the controls is about 12.6 k ohms, this seems normal. So my question is this, if a pickup went bad would there be a normal impeadence? or could I still get a 6.3 k per pickup reading and the hum too? I have some new pickups but don't want to put them in, these used to sound fine, I've been trying to figure out if I have a ground loop or something but that doesn't seem the case, any ideas are appreciated. Also my Jazz bass sounds fine when plugged into the same amps.

The 60hz hum is probably related to a bad ground wire. With the '59 pickup, or any conventional P-bass pickup, your bass needs to be grounded via a ground wire that runs from the bridge to the control cavity.
Any break in this wire will give you the hum or the wire can actually become buried in the bass's finish and lose contact with the bridge.

There are a number of things that can cause such a ground loop.
I don't think that the pickup is going bad because you are still getting a good signal from both halves of the pickup.

It is time to take your bass apart and see what is going on.
