I just bought this lined fretless P-Bass with jazz pickup for $475.
Seller didn't know the history of the guitar.
He seemed to think it was a 1982 and that the frets were removed from the neck by previous owner.
I think the original finish was removed and it is now a raw stained wood body.
Not sure if the jazz pickup is original or not
There is a bit of a hum (depending on how the knobs are turned) and it seems like the controls don't function properly. The P-bass pickups are kind of floating, they move up and down if you press on them.
I plan to take it to a guitar shop soon and have it's guts cleaned up.

Overall it is a smooth player. It sounds good, and it is a very pretty guitar.

I was just wanting to show it off and I was curious what you guys could tell me about it.

What a great forum!!

tHE "E3" serial numbers were used on instruments from 1982 until 1985 when the Fullerton Plant closed. There should be a neck code on the paddle end of the neck. There are also date codes on the pots. These codes could further narrow down the year. These neck and pot codes will tell you the earliest that it could have been made, but not exactly when.

When doing the electronics overhaul I'd use the original pots, if in fact they are original.

The pickups are supposed to be floating. There should be very dense foam underneath them. However the original foam could have been replaced with less dense foam at some point.

That was a really good price and you can feel good about it even if the electronics need work.

I should further qualify my statement that it was a good buy. It was as long as there are no neck issues and the truss rod doesn't have any issues.

The Jazz bass pickup looks like a Schecter pickup. The single coil Jazz pickup will always hum in a P-J pickup configuration if it is a standard single coil pickup with no other hum-cancelling circuitry. That is normal operation.
I think that it may be a 1983 bass and if it is there may be an actual date stamped on the but end of the neck instead of a date code which is very common on other years of Fender basses.
You got a great deal on that bass. R U gonna leave it fretless?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I'll leave it fretless.
Whoever removed the frets did a great job.

I took it to Bass Emporium on Saturday and they are getting it set up for me.

I can't wait to get it back and jam on it.

The J pickup looks too close to the bridge to be stock. Fender always puts the J pickup in the mid 70's location on P/J basses like this, which is roughly halfway between the bottom of the and the top of the bridge, pickguard, and very slightly closer to the pickguard.

Astute observation. I was thinking the same thing. However I thought it might be the angle of the photo. But it does look too close to the bridge. I am pretty sure this is a mod.
