I own an MIM P Bass made in 2000 and am experimenting with strings. The set of D Dardio 105mm I have on needs to be changed and wondered if anyone can say whether flats would be ok for rock slap and funk.Stock PUPS still on.
I want more of a thump. Am using a Rumble 100 210(which incedentially was just repaired - several dry joints and lots of crackling ? poor assembly I think)

Regards from Cape Town ZA.

Just put Rotosounds on my FSR MIM Precision. I'm real pleased with their performance, they give a great thump. They are mediums, .045-.100.

Just be aware, you'll have a period of adjustment. Once you get used to them, I think you'll be happy.

Hi GBDIGCAT and welcome to the forum.

Flats may not be the best choice for funk and slap. However some flats are brighter than others and better lend themselves to FUNK such as the stainless steel ones. The lighter gauge flats would be better for funk. I don't play slap at all, but the lighter gauge ones do sound better for funk.

Rotos that Oxfan uses are bright sounding and the Fender flats are very bright sounding, especially the smaller gauge ones when new. As they age they'll lose that fresh brightness though.

Just a couple of months ago had my circa '99 MIM Precision setup and strung with LaBella "Deep Sound" flats. They're the only string I'd keep on it from now on.

Their sound is legendary (listen to Jamerson, or DD Dunn....same bass & string setup pretty much). Playing is smooth. As stated above, I also do no slapping [just not my thing. Prefer melody bass lines.

My '67 Höfner hand-crafted in Germany will be getting the T-I flats, and the '85 Ric 4003s as well. So tired of the RW bass string scene.

Experience is the ultimate teacher.

A lot of us swear by Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats. They are livelier than most. They are also lower tension than a lot of flats, but I have installed them on all my basses for the last few years.

They are pricey, but they last forever.

i just ordered an American Vintage '57 P, and it'll certainly get TI Jazz Flats. Nothing else comes close.

Flatwounds may sound a bit more mellow than that of roundwounds...

but for flats best ones are TI's, GhS Precision Flats..
