TommyGunn just got one, and I believe he has talked about selling it. Not sure what he paid for it, but he'll see this thread eventually and put his 2 cents in.

I've had one for roughly 5 months, now.

With a factory suggested price of $1180.00, I paid $740.00 + tax for mine new but I understand that the dealer to customer pricing went up recently, so I think that I got a good deal.

The slab body takes some getting used to if you stand at gigs rather than sitting, however, it's not THAT big of a deal. I have CHS flatwounds on ALL my Fender basses and they work exceptionally well for my particular style. The BadA$$ II bridge on the Mike Dirnt Artist series gives 15 percent more sustain than the factory bridges on my P. Bass MIM version or my J. Power Bass Special, running through a Fender Bassman 250-210 amp. Definately recommend this Artist Series if you want the look and feel of the early 50's Fender bass. Excellent choice.

There are two different models. One FENDER and one SQUIER. I believe I recall that Tommygun bought a Squier one.

So since this is the Fender Forum, are you referring to the Fender one? Probably need to know.

One feature not yet mentioned is the Custom Shop '59 pickup.
So far as I know this is the only first generation body with a second generation pickup. It is also the only first generation with a rosewood fretboard. As mentioned it is a slab body however there is some arm contouring on the top. The body is ash. The pickguard is streamlined a bit from the 51 amoeba. If you want more sustain the aftermarket bridge is good but don't loose the adjustment hex key for the bridge. They are a booger to find. I've lost two of them over the years.

I dang near bought one of the Fender Mike Dirnt basses instead of the '51 RI. Still might get one. It is one of the most unique basses out there.

Excellent points, Dave - The Custom Shop pickup is bullet proof on the Mike Dirnt P. Bass. Passive raw gain is not quite as high as the stock pickup as found on the average P. bass, but the quality of the pickup in grabbing the low end frequency response of the E string especially, is incredible. I just run the master volume control on the bass up just a bit as compared to a standard P. bass and man, what a sound.

Regarding the lost adjustment key(s) for the B-A II bridge = place any small adjustment tools in an old label-less and cleaned plastic medication bottle with the locking safety cap and keep it in one of the zipper compartments in the Gig Bag that the bass is supplied with. Keeps 'em all in one place and handy to get at. Just a drop of 3-in-1 oil in the container will keep salts from finger prints from rusting or discoloring the tools.
