I'm getting a new bass for Christmas and I just needed help deciding. I've heard great things about all of these basses but I just need a second opinion since I'm fairly new to bass. Thanks.

I have a 60th Anniv. MIM P...I set it up to look like a 59' P of sorts. It plays and sounds amazing, and I have it strung up with a set of Fender 7150M's...great old school tone, much like that of a 59 P. However, the Classic 50's P I can't stop raving about. I've played 5 of them and everyone was incredible. Solid, great tone and a killer neck. Everything a P should be and nothing it shouldn't. Either of those two basses I can safely recommend as high quality instruments that will last you for years and help you sound amazing. As far as the Deluxe P Special, I really can't say as there's not much about it that appeals to me. I don't care for the J pup in the bridge, I don't care for active basses, and I don't like J necks, they're just too thin.

I can tell you that in the past 10 years the Ensenada basses have come lightyears from where they started. So much so that I prefer MIM's to HWY1's and AS basses. My only advice would be to try and play each of one if you could to get a better idea of what would work for you.

I voted for the P-Bass Special, for two reasons, first, when I recently had to make the same choice that's the direction I went and I have not been disappointed; and second, it offers a great range of tone. HOWEVER: if you don't want a J-bass neck (which is narrower than a P-bass) it is not for you. Also, like some others here, I would have preferred to forego the active electronics. All those things aside, however, the special is quite a beauty and is fun to play.

Should these issues affect you (the neck and electronics, in particular) I would personally go with the 50s Precision. Had I to do it over again, that's where I'm leaning.

As the OP is from almost 6 months ago, and Christmas was 3 months ago, I wonder which one he decided on?
