I am interested in buying a supposedly original 1961 P Bass. I had the seller send me many shots, and they all check out, as fas as the low resolution of his phone camera allows me to see.

But I am curious about the originality of the pick up. I have a shot of it and like your best guess whether the bobbin color and construction looks vintage 1961.

Thanks in advance,
JM

P.S.: How about the decal? Is that an aftermarket one or does it look original to you?

The color of the Pickup bobbin looks to be correct for a 1961 Precision bass. It is the dark colored No. 42 formvar copper windings that you want to see on this pickup and it has the right color windings for what that is worth.

The body has been refinished so you should be paying far less than market value for an original finish bass. The headstock has the correct tuners but this bass should have a rosewood fingerboard and the pictures do not show the finger board.

From my perspective. It looks right from what I can see.

Thank you so much! That was the pickup information I was seeking.

Can I also bother you with an additional topic of authentication of this bass?

It has the correct serial number for the year 1961, the correct slab fingerboard (see picture), but why is the date pencil writing on the neck offset to the left? Isn't it normally in the center, right around the truss rod nut?

Thanks,
JM

The pencil date markings are variable based on who wrote them.
The date on your bass is darker that I am used to seeing and it is not centered but that, in itself, does not mean that they are not original to the bass.

I can see the slab finger board and I did notice that the rosewood finger board was visible in the body picture that showed the pickup windings.

If you are happy with your deal then I say go for it!
