I have a prototype P-Bass that I am trying to authenticate. There are no numbers or markings. I acquired this from a dear friend who has since passed away before giving me the associated paperwork I recall being told this was one of the first prototypes - late 1940's possibly 1950.
Can anyone help me verify this bass' authenticity and/or is there a trusted source that specializes in prototype instruments?
Thanking you in advance for any help.

George Gruhn of Gruhn guitars Nashville would be worth calling on something this amazing. I've never actually seen one but they could exist. .

By paperwork, what kind of paperwork? Can you post photos of the bass please and scans of the paperwork?

Holly hell~ If that is a prototype bass, keep good care of it. I can't even imagine what you could sell that for...

I asked Geoge Fullerton about the existence of any prototypes for the original Precision bass and he said that Leo, to his recollection, had them all cut up.

That does not mean that a prototype Precision bass can not exist, It just means that I am highly skeptical of the authenticiy of any prototype, especially considering that the principle developers of the P-bass have all passed away. George Fullerton just passed away on July 4,2009. RIP.
So how can anyone really authenticate it?

Other questions come to mind:
Why hasn't this bass surfaced earlier? Was it taken from the factory without Leo's knowlege or did he give it away to a test player and forgot about it?
I would love to see what you have.
