Just a preference thing. The Hoppus sig has just that setup.

Well, the Hoppus Sig has the P pickup closer to the neck by about 1/2 and inch. Almost every time you see a P pickup on a jazz body they have this, other whise the P pickup is between the pickguard and the body.

Basically the P pickup is naturally a little closer to the bridge than the J neck pickup, so they just move the P pickup to where the J neck pickup would be.

I guess the comfort of slapping would be the benefits of happing a P-neck on a J bass?

Oh it will work alright. And it is a comfort thing. I'm not a big proponent of moving parts around though. Because if you swap necks the Jazz will play like a P....which means that somewhere there is a P that plays like a J.

I wish I could get a MIM P-Bass Special with a P-Neck from the factory. I know Specials have traditionally had J necks but also are great sounding basses for the money.

Its more than just comfort. Different neck body combinations can give you a dramatic change in the way a bass sounds and feels. These changes can be for the good or for the bad.

I used to put a Precision neck on my Jazz bass and vice versa and I got two very different feeling instruments from the originals.
The Jazz is still a Jazz- with two pickups and the precision is still a precision, with single volume and tone controls, but different necks do make for big changes, at least on the USA basses.

I see, well I recently watched Jaco Pastorius's Video saying he deliberately used a P-Bass neck on his J- Bass well only for practice, but well there are some players like Tim of Rage Against the Machine and well Mark Hoppus who performs using P Bass necks..

Are you suggesting that putting a P neck on a J body will actually change the tone? I've never done it, so I don't know, but I just can't see why that would be, unless your taking a P neck from a different line of instruments, i.e. a MIM P on a MIA body. But if you were putting a MIA p neck on a MIA j body, the wood, finishes, and construction are the same...

Yes the construction is basically the same but you do have the variation of a different neck and its unique properties, like weight, frets and a maple or rosewood fingerboard . It may not make a dramatic difference to a listener who is just judging the output of the bass, but to a player, who can sense a different neck and all of its characteristics, it can be like night and day. You should try it sometime. It's easily reversible and you may be surprised at the result.
