Hi Friends. I want to know your opinion and advise on this. I bought a 2008 American Standard P-bass early this year. It's has a maple fingerboard. I love it!!!

I've tried the 62 P-bass reissue at my local guitar store a few times and I even played it side by side with their 2008 Am Std P bass, like the one I have (although theones in the store are in rough shape, may not set up properly), I found that the sound of the 62 P-bass, which is more expensive, is really good.

You can hear the vintage vibe, more woody and maybe differerent definition on the mid-range. It's hard to describe, but you probably know what I meant.

My bass, sounds more modern, more high end to it I guess. Mabye it's suits modern rock music more or be better with slapping. What do you think?

I kinda don't want to mess with what I have right now, but at the same time I'm thinking of maybe chagning my pick up and get a more vintage sound that I dig. Hmm....

The '62 pick-ups are only $70, what do you have to lose?
I say buy it, and try it.

The biggest difference between the Am. Standard pickup and the 62 is the midrange voicing. Vintage pickups tend to lean more toward the high mids whereas the modern ones lean to the low mids. It's a different sound, and I can't say which would necessarily be better, they're both amazing pickups.

Personally I really like the vintage 62's on p-basses because they have more of the hi-mids. Because p-basses have short/fat pickup bobbins and it's proximity toward the bridge, they a lot of natural lo-mids. This can give you a great beefy sound and a fantastic grind if you pump the gain and the midrange on the amp. The stock am. standard pickups accentuate the low-mids, and therefore accentuate this quality.

However the lack of hi-mid presence can really effect the note clarity. The 62's give you some of the hi-mids as well as having the low midrange presence (though not as much low-mids as the am. standard), and I've found it's a really good balance.

Again though, it's really all about what you want from the bass. If you feel you're lacking some note definition, you should consider swapping pickups. If you love the current sound, then keep the stock ones.

I installed one of those Original '62's in my MIA P Deluxe after having it recommended by dozens and dozens of players I trust, and it rocks. Love it.
