I have read a few posts on other boards that the AV basses have poly underneath the nitro finish. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance

Most Fender instruments since 1963 have had a plastic undercoating of some sort. The nitrocellulose is then put on top. A good website to check out about the nitro over the poly like “fullerplast” is: http://www.caraguitars.com/fullerplast.asp

Poly usually refers to polyurethane. And that is not possible as adherence would be really difficult (polyurethane is not compatible with nitro). Not sure about polyester but according to the website it's been done. So yeah, polyester not polyurethane. To avoid confusion ;)

I don't know what it is (polyurethane is what I thought) but there is some sort of finish under the nitrocellulose on the AV basses. I've got an AV 57 P-bass in tobacco sunburst and and AV 62 Jazz in olympic white and it is really obvious on the sunburst, less so with the white. But that's okay with me, just means the finish will last longer as I'm playing these hot summer days!

Here's a pic of the 57 P-bass from a 4th of July parade I played in last month:

Again, sorry for my lack of Fender experience, but if the bass has an ash body then what you see under the nitro could be grain filler and sanding sealer. I don't think they grain fill with polyanything as it's going to take them 4 times the material quantity and about 6 times the work! And it might create adherence issues later. So I'm not sure, you probably want to do some research to find out. That website seems credible to me though!
