I'm sorry I don't remember where I read it but I seem to recall that the solid black Fender logo is a fake. Again, I don't remember where I saw it but the article said that the authentic ones were black outlined gold lettering.

I've seen it on mid 90's models.

The very early MIM basses and guitars had a solid black logo. The thing to watch out for here is that "Squier Series" instruments were made in the SAME plant using the SAME "FENDER" decal. There was a very small "SQUIRE SERIES" decal added to the peghead tip of the headstock in approximately the same location where you would find "DELUXE SERIES" script decals on the recent MIM Deluxe models still on sale. The Squire instruments are less desirable as the woods, necks, frets, electronics, hardware is different than on the MIM Fenders, even though they were made in the same plant. I thought it was impossible to remove the "Squier Series" decal logo without leaving some trace that it had once been there, however I've examined photos of a headstock that had a Squier Series logo on it originally and I could not tell that it had been removed. So apparently some people know how to get them off undetected. Of course the serial number would be a tip that something is amiss.

Further, that is a properly formatted 1996 Fender serial if that helps. The solid black headstock logo appears period correct to me. I had a 95 Jazz with a similar logo.
