Yep...listen to lots of Fretless players (Jaco comes to mind immediately) and learn their technique. Fretless bass is a very expressive instrument when played correctly but most importantly, PRACTICE.

Listen to your playing (record yourself playing scales and different intervals if possible) and make sure you develop a fine tuned ear for correct intonation (playing the note dead on in tune). There's nothing worse than listening to someone that hasn't spent the necessary time in practice on a fretless and is playing everything out of tune. I love playing my fretless but I find I need to practice it often to stay on top of it. Fortunately, I gained an ear for correct intonation at an early age after playing trombone since I was 7 years old and correct intonation was beat into me (not literally) by my teacher :) .

Here's a link that has some good info in it:

I also forgot to mention that most times, after you "de-fret" a bass, the action has to be lowered. That would mean lowering the nut slots (especially) and bridge settings. I also set the back bow in my neck to "almost" flat. If you don't have the tools to do the nut slots, any luthier can do it for a nominal fee.

With that set up, I get the best fretless "mwahhh" sound. The height of the action is fairly critical on a fretless and is a balancing act between too much of the string buzzing on the fretboard and just enough to get that distinctive fretless sound.
