How many of you have problems with straplocks?

I had two go '$@!& up' on me lately, one was a Schaller straplock which wouldn't stay locked in and kept me worrying that it was going to fail, even after spraying it with some WD40 oil. So that had to go.

The other was a Fender straplock which broke off at the end and I had to use a pair of snipe nosed pliers to release it. That too found its way to the bin.

Hopefully, my straplock war is over and all should be good from now on :)

I'd love to hear other tales of woe.

Ive had many straplocks fail on me, but none worse that the schallers. I lost the front straplock and one of my pbass's neck hit the concrete and snapped. I cried for weeks about that. Eventually i just screwed the strap to the bass and said to hell with the locks.

There's a simple cheap solution: 50 cent plastic rings that go around regular strap buttons. No need to modify anything, and they're DAMN reliable. I've had a lot of abuse with them, and they're as good as the metal straplocks that you have to instal. Best part: they look way better than normal straplocks.

I trust my $1200 bass on these things.

I have always used Schaller/Fender straplocks and have never had a problem. I always use the original screw from the bass strap button, not the ones that come with the straplock. Those are always a smaller diameter than what is needed.
Also, maybe use a small, tiny amount of Loc-tite or Super glue when installing the screw. JMO

Same like Zod, all my basses, 'cept for the acoustic has Schaller strap locks, no issues. Had one of the pull button broke 2 yrs ago, but it was 21 yrs old.

Do you use leather straps MM? I know when I used to use all leather strap it wasn't too big a deal. It was tough to put the button thru the straps. But I've since use nylon straps, and the ends are soft (p)leather so it comes off really easy. Hence the straplocks. I've use Schaller Straplocks since '90, haven't looked back since :)

I've used Schaller and Dunlop, with nary a problem. I dropped a Jazz Bass just once (caught it, no damage), and that was enough. Straplocks ever since.

Use the plastic rings as anubis16 says, or get Ernie Ball strap locks. They work really well.

But bottom line is, never trust your straplocks 100 %. I use straplocks as an extra backup and not as a reason to throw my bass around like it was free and I had a 1000 more of it :p

I have an epic win kind of story! On all my electric guitars and basses, i take the strap buttons off, align the holes in a strap with the holes in the body, then out a washer on the strap and align that hole. Then you put the strap button back on over the strap and the washer, and that thing will NEVER move unless you take it off. Everyone here does it that way, and i'm in the guitar-spinning capital of the world.
