I have a few questions for the experts here. I used to have 2 P bass Specials from 81 or 82 years ago. They were the best sounding basses I have ever owned. I had a few problems with both of them over time. The active electronics started giving me troubles. Eventually I foolishly sold them both at fire sale prices.

My 1st questions is, Can the custom shop duplicate the active electronics used in these Basses. Im sure there are schematics somewhere there at fender for the circuit boards, and im sure it is possible to make one off stuff like that if the price is right (which i dont care how much it costs). I just wonder if its possible to be done. Or better yet, if there could possibly be any original boards laying around somewhere around there that might be able to be had.

My 2nd questions is, Are the pickups in this model base "Special". Or are they just regular pickups that would have been used in other P basses of that era. If you had one of these basses and swapped the pickups for say some Duncan Quarter pounders, would the actives still funtion the same.

My 3rd question is. Would the custom shop make a complete repro bass of the 82 Pbass special?

I am in the process now of trying to find a good original one of these for sale somewhere. I have been looking for a while, but there arent many around.

thanks
Jim

Special or Elite? I've got an 83 Elite that has active electronics.

Not off the top of my head but I'm sure there are Fender fan websites with that info. Mine is an Elite II with two split coil pickups and active electronics.

Hmm, th elites have the fine tuning bridges, different pickups, like you cant see the pole pieces, and they have different machine heads as well. The 1981 special has a high mass bridge, bt not fine tuning and standard tuners, but the bridge is brass i think. to my knowledge, also the elites came with several pick up cominbinations, fretless, and u cud have for example, 2 p bass pickups.
