You may be opening Pandora's box by venturing into effects.

Are you seeking a multi-effects unit or individual stompboxes?

One pedal you should seriously look into buying is the Tech 21 VT Bass.

VT Bass Google Search

Don't be scared of the $149 price tag. It may seem expensive, particularly for someone with no effects experience, but some have called it the "pedal of the future". This is a truely awesome pedal, and you are capable of various tones. I love it, and for the most part it is always on in some form.

The Effects Forum on TalkBass will give you a more extensive and thorough review of any effects pedal you want to know about, and can answer your effects questions alot better than I can. Simply register and then use the "search" function to find out what you need to know.

If you're gonna do an overdrive pedal, I highly recomend choosing something that isn't too harsh. Bear in mind there is a difference between overdrive, distortion, and fuzz. Overdrive adds a lot of grind to the tone, but is gennerally very subtle, and very usable. Distortion, and fuzz however sound more like a guitar with distortion, and can be very harsh. I personally think overdrive is the most useful of the three, but you'll find a lot that do all of them.

Just be warned. MANY pedals on the market WONT do overdrive, but will do distortion or fuzz.

+1
I like OD and Fuzz.

Maybe spend the day at your local guitar shop experimenting with different pedals, and make sure they have a great return policy!

Hi, I've tried loads of difference effects on bass and most don't really
work across the board. If you are looking for a specific sound for a track
buy a Behringer pedal they work reasonably well and only cost pennies
if you don't like the sound, if you do like the sound you can always upgrade to a more robust maker like Boss.
Personally I use the Tech 21 VT bass for Overdriven tube sounds because it does work but not much better than the Ashdown Overdrive at a third of the price. I use an Ashdown compressor which again works well for the money. Two of my best pedals are not effects 1: the Korg Pitchblack floor tuner and 2: Seymour Duncan pickup booster you will keep these two for years as part of your standard set whatever else you choose.
Good luck
Dr. Fox
