I just recently got a Foto-Flame P-Bass. I have several Jazz Basses Both USA models, and this thing really holds its own. The Fit and finish is top notch and it plays so smooth. This is one with the hamburgler on it and I wondered does that really add value ?? It is a natural color with a clear coat on it. The clear is cracked in several spots but that seems to be common with these guitars. I really cant find mutch about them so I came to the experts. Any help would be nice

You STOLE that thing! How do you people find these deals? This is a Fender Japan model. They all have the Hamburglar. At least the ones I've seen. I've not seen one in the past few years either. They look great and play well.

Congratulations and enjoy!

This particular pawn shop has given up many treasures :D From what I was told fender stopped and pulled the ones with the hamburglar. That is what is suppose to make them rare. I have seen some without.

I love the Hamburgular on the Photoflames!
I think that is a very cool bass. I wish I had one.

At least Fender admitted they were photos--around the same time some cheap brands were offering photo finishes without admitting it.

Something to keep in mind with lower priced guitars with fabulous finishes.

There are all sorts of legends about the so-called "Hamburglar" design in the photoflame finishes. Let’s put them to rest.

Product recalls, the firing of the employee responsible, his eventual mysterious disappearance, his choking to death on a Quarter-Pounder, mass destruction of "Hamburglar" instruments once the "secret conspiracy” was discovered and other such fables are just SOME of the stories I’ve heard. None of these tales ever turned out to be true, at least to the best of my knowledge anyway.

My opinion is that all these stories, as intriguing as they sound, originated from multiple sellers hawking an instrument they were trying to sell in a rather successful effort to make it seem rarer and more valuable than it actually was to a prospective purchaser.

The truth is that all of the Fender photoflame series basses and guitars I have ever seen have a "Hamburglar" on them SOMEWHERE. Sometimes the design is on the back of the neck like on the Strats.

The design is transferred onto a photographically reactive polymer wrap which is sort of like a cellophane or Saran-Wrap upon which an image has been transferred in a photographic process in a transfer from a MASTER NEGATIVE. The negative NEVER changed. All the wraps are identical within each model which explains why the "Hamburglar" moved to the neck on the Strats, to the Upper bout on the Jazz and was perfectly centered just below the bridge on the Telecaster guitar. The mass produced photo-reactive wrapping is heated to bond it to the wood and then clear coated over. It is sort of like a veneer only it is a polymer.

The real question is this, does anyone have one without a "Hamburglar" on it somewhere? I’m guessing not. One without the Hamburglar would be far rarer than one with it.

Where are the pictures of the NON-Hamburglar ones? Post them please! Anyone? This is a MYTH perpetuated by unscrupulous resellers of used gear. Stop being a victim. Buyer and rubes beware!

well, thanks for the info. I was just trying to check facts that I saw on the internet. I asked here because this is where the experts are. These forums are sometimes full of ex-employees and people who are trueley experts on these guitars. thanks for all your help.

I also recently bought a clean '95 Foto Flame P with a tort guard. I am also very pleased with it. I have an '89 P Bass with a G&L pickup and bridge and this sounds very different.

I don't know why everyone wants to talk about the Hamburgler thing.
What I find interesting is the stock pickup in this baby. It nails a vintage PBass sound without spending alot of money. My '89 had a very dull, indistinct stock pickup. The Foto Flame is way better.

Does anyone know the origin or type of the pickups in these things?

They not only sound good, they look fabulous and play well. The pickups are probably Fender Japan.
