If you're looking for a good portable amp, check out a Gallien-Kruger MB150S. It is a combo amp with 1 12" speaker at 75 watts that jumps to 150 watts when you add an extension cab. But it kicks as is, weighs only 30 lbs and can fit almost anywhere. Has a Direct Out so you can straight into a board for recording as well. I've had one since '91 and only recently had to replace the speaker (the original one just dry rotted). I've used it with 7 piece Dead Cover band, with an acoustic bass backing a female singer songwriter, in a jazz trio, and too many jam sessions and basements to count.

'Use a Line 6 LD 150 at Saturday Mass, 88 outings so far. It's reliable and okay for the genre but for a lot of toting, a wee bit heavy unless you are all ripped / buff.

I've yet to find a bass amp that is light...LOL, even the combos are heavy, the good brands at least. My lightest combo was a Peavey Basic 50 - haha, 50 watts of fury...Those were the days. The only thing light weight on my gear is the head, and that's not a lightweight head either.

The MARKBASS CMD 121 P is a blast. Pretty lightweight (29 lbs) and compact (17/15/14 in.). At the same time it offers a power of 450 W. That's definitely enough for practice AND rehearsal. I adore this little power cube, because it sounds great too.

And if you feel you even need some more punch, just add another MARKBASS cabinet (I opted for the TRAVELLER 102 P). The built in amp of the CMD 121 P provides well enough power for an additional speaker.
Combo AND cabinet are still so compact that I can carry both around in the trunk of my BMW Z4 roadster!

OK, MARKBASS is somewhat pricy, but definetly worth the money.

Sup guys, i just joined a while ago and im wondering if you guys can help me. I'm looking for a good portable bass amp that i can take to school to play on. I'm have a mexican made Fender P, and i really want an amp that i can take to school so i can practice on. I know they have mini guitar amps on sale at guitar center, but i dont think they have bass amps there. O, and i really dont care if it's a headphone amp, i just want to get some good sound out of a small amp. So if anyone out there knows about any good small bass amps, help me out man.

I have several smaller amps, but the smallest and lightest would probably be the Epiphone and it has jack for earphones as well. Good luck,
Bill

A buddy of mine has that one and the CMD 102P. Both are small, portable, and sound good. I just can't get over the colors, reminds me of Dewalt tools.

The markbass combos are nice and powerful. Only downside and its a bid downside is their price. Seems like they are only available at select Guitar Centers in the US. Still saving up for a good lightweight cab for my Eden WTX 260 head. If you have the money, their stuff is great and appears to be of good quality.

I guess it depends on what you want when you say portable ... do you mean light weight, light output (level), small stage footprint, ability to transport in a compact car, etc.?

I've been playing for over 30 years, and I've used Sunn/Ampeg stacks, GK Stacks, Kustom tuck and rolls, Peavey, Fender bassmans, etc. --- all heavy and usually hard to fit it a backseat. However, after Hurricane Katrina I had to try to replace as much sound with as little $ as possible, and ended up buying a Behringer BX3000 Ultrabass combo for about $249. If you're going with a single speaker for bass, my experience is you want that speaker to be 15". They have either a paper or aluminum cone option; both sound good but it depends on how crisp and punchy you need the sound. I went with paper as I play most blues, jazz and old r & b. The EQ's not bad, it does have built-in compression and limiting, and puts out 300 W of beefy sound from a tilt back cabinet (which you can use later as a monitor if you expand your rig). All in all, a pretty great deal in a small package (although it does weigh nearly 85 pounds). Until you actually NEED an SWT, Ampeg or GK stack (and I wonder about that now, in retrospect), it should do the trick.
