So....I have a USA Jazz in O White w/maple neck on order.

Now I want to also order a P bass...I need a USA P Bass!

So...I want Sunburst...but I just cannot decide on rosewood or maple!

Maple has a lovely snappiness to it...what you guys think?

Hi Gazzy, Lucky you!

In my opinion "snappiness" is not something I look for is a second generation P-bass with split coil pickup. First generation yes, but second generation no. Solid thump however is something I do want in a Precision. That usually means a rosewood board. That being said, I would prefer a second generation P-bass with a maple board to a Jazz with a maple board.

BUT (notice that is a big but) depending on your style of play it might be precisely the other way around for you!

I like rosewood on a Jazz because they are inherently brighter sounding anyway and I just don't need any extra zing for the stuff I do. I'm not a snap, slap, tap and pop guy anyway but instead just do solid hook playing ala James Jamerson, usually with only the right index finger. If I'm going to do any thing like slap and pop, which just isn't my bag really, I will reach for the active bass.

Right now I only have one bass with a maple board and it is a Precision.

I would play a Precision with one of each board materials and decide what works best for you. What I say is right for me could be completely wrong for you! Same goes for wood, finishes, strings, pickups and every other tonal component. The last thing I'd buy myself is a Jazz with a maple board, but for many people that is their favorite bass setup.

So buy what you think works for you and your playing style and the application you intend for that bass.

The American Vintage '62 is a real winner by the way.

Got to agree with Brother Dave, you'll have your Jazz to get all the brighter, snappier and treble you need. Precisions are made to go thump. I have a Precision with a rose wood neck. Couldn't be happier with it.

This is your choice so, play a bunch before you decide.

Good luck.

I like both, and have both P-basses and Jazzes with each. I like the look of rosewood fretboards with three-tone sunburst but maple fretboards on two-tone (tobacco) sunbursts. But like Dave says, just play some and buy whatever feels right.

If it's gonna be sunburst, then...

I had the same question when I was buying a 2008 Am Standard P-Bass. It's not an easy decision. I wish I can have both.

I was a rosewood fan, never owned a maple fingerboard bass. After a lot of thinking and trying, at the end I bought one with MAPLE fingerboard!!! And it's with the 3 tone sunburst. I think it looks good and a bit different from a lot of what people have out there. It looks really cool. I love it.

I think for the sunburst, both the maple and rosewood looks classic.

So far, I'm really digging my bass with the maple, there's a slight edge to it and I like.

Ya, know, Roger Waters (earlier picture) has been playing a P-Bass with maple board for a very long time now.

Echoing Brother Dave's comment on Amercian Vintage ,62 - he is right, that's a great sounding bass. It's more expensive and doesn't have some of the features the one has like, the smooth neck, graphite reinforced neck and the neck is wider on the '62. That's something to consider.

I think at the end, you can play around with your amp setting or EQ or whatever to get a more thumpy sound or more snappy sound out of either maple or rosewood P-Bass.

You really have to follow your instinct on this one. And remember one won't suck over the other.

Hope that helps!

I had a 62 Vintage P Bass (with rosewood board of course) love it , but now own an Am Stndard with Maple. Now I prefer the P Bass with maple. I believe it compliments the P Bass tone a little better. JMO and taste though. Olmpic white is my all time fav for either J or P. But have only owned Sunbrst or blk. IMO, looks wise sunburst is better with rose.
